A man staying at a hotel in Epping has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, sparking outrage and protests.

Hadush Kebatu, an Ethiopian asylum seeker residing at The Bell Hotel, was convicted of several offences, including harassing a girl, inciting her to engage in sexual activity, and an attempted sexual assault. The incidents occurred in Epping, Essex, on 7 and 8 July, leading to public demonstrations outside the hotel.

During the trial at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court, it was revealed that Kebatu attempted to kiss the girl, touched her inappropriately, and made disturbing remarks about wanting children with her. When a woman intervened, he also inappropriately touched her, leaving her "shocked and uncomfortable".

The judge noted that Kebatu created "a version of events he'd only decided upon when he took the witness stand." Witnesses recounted hearing him proposition the young girl and a friend, asking them to return to the hotel and making inappropriate remarks about their futures.

Kebatu, claiming to have travelled through multiple countries, insisted he was innocent, describing himself as "not a wild animal." However, his testimony was dismissed, and he was cautioned to expect a prison sentence upon returning to court on 23 September, reported the BBC.

Throughout the legal proceedings, it was also revealed that Kebatu had paid €2,500 (approximately 94,500 Thai baht) to travel to the UK. Despite his claims to be a sports teacher in Ethiopia, his actions in Epping presented a different picture, ultimately leading to his conviction.

  • Travelling through several countries to seek asylum is not seeking asylum. It's with the specific goal of getting to the UK. 'Asylum' is the nearest safe country.   Isn't it amazing that now

The Hotel hasn’t been found guilty of sexual assault, the above individual has.

Put him in prison and then deport him back to Ethiopia.

Perhaps one of the more bizarre claims we can expect to see today.

But it is still early.

No it wouldn’t.

UK Asylum law includes the power to refuse/cancel the asylum claim of anyone convicted of a serious crime.

Deport him back to Ethiopia.

People have lost their common sense. Just look at the face of this goblin. That alone should have been enough to have his application rejected and turned away.

Isn't it amazing that now in the UK you need to provide your passport to watch porn, but you don't need one to enter the country!

But he's a qualified sports instructor.

They have.

And this Government has made positive moves to ensure convicted asylum seekers are deported and any appeal they wish to make is submitted from overseas, not in the UK.

According to the very reputable US government all our best and brightest engineers come from the most backwards and miserable countries on the planet. Without the people that made this lovely scene Microsoft and Apple would surely go out of business.

Dismissing offhand formal Government statements in order to maintain a view not substantiated by facts is, I guess, one way of keeping reality at bay.

I’m all in favour of foreign Governments accepting their criminal citizens into their prisons, but it’s not something a UK court or a UK Government can order.

I trust you welcome the Government’s moves to add more countries to the ‘Deport First Scheme’, refer below:

Deport him back to Ethiopia.

And yet foreign criminals are so often allowed to stay.
