September 10, 2025Sep 10 File photo for reference only Thailand has recently passed a crucial audit conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), highlighting the nation’s solid standing in aviation safety. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), led by Air Chief Marshal Manat Chavanaprayoon, shared this positive development on Tuesday. The ICAO's inspection scrutinised Thailand's civil aviation safety oversight system from 27th August to 8th September. This was part of the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme–Continuous Monitoring Approach. The audit focused on eight key areas, including aviation legislation, safety regulations, personnel licensing, aircraft operations, airworthiness, and accident investigation, culminating in an impressive score. Preliminary findings revealed that Thailand scored 91.35% in areas overseen by CAAT, surpassing the global average of 70.5%. Notably, the country achieved a flawless 100% in aviation legislation and regulatory organisation, a testament to Thailand's modern legal framework and robust aviation authority. This achievement marks a significant recovery from 2015, when Thailand faced 33 major safety concerns, earning a “red flag” and a low score of 33.53%. Reforms ensued with the establishment of the CAAT, leading to the flag’s removal in 2017 and consistent improvements thereafter. ACM Manat emphasised that these latest results demonstrate not just recovery, but significant advancement, positioning Thailand as a credible force in global aviation safety. While final audit results are pending, these initial outcomes already underscore successful cooperation within the sector. This includes contributions from Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, Airports of Thailand Plc, the Department of Airports, and various airline partners. This success is expected to fortify long-term confidence in Thailand’s aviation industry, promoting growth and expansion within the sector. The achievement not only boosts Thailand's reputation but also supports the country's airlines in pursuing broader opportunities globally. Overall, Thailand's comprehensive reforms and commitment to safety have set a new standard in aviation, reflecting a forward-thinking approach that aligns with international benchmarks. This progress fosters a safer environment for both domestic and international flights, solidifying Thailand's position as a leader in aviation safety and reliability. I'm glad they've finally emerged from the aviation doghouse, but let's not pretend that simply having a proper regulatory framework in place is some kind of amazing accomplishment that no nation but Thailand could have achieved.
