Three people have tragically died attempting to cross the English Channel near Calais, according to French authorities. The victims, believed to be young people from Egypt and South East Asia, reportedly perished after being crushed at the bottom of an overloaded boat carrying over 70 passengers. Laurent Touvet, the Prefect of Pas-de-Calais, blamed smuggling gangs and promised action against those responsible.

Initial reports suggested two victims were children, but authorities later described them as "young people". In a parallel incident, three people remain missing from another crossing attempt off Neufchâtel-Hardelot, while the French navy successfully rescued 115 people from a third boat with no injuries reported. Authorities note this as possibly the highest number seen in a single rescue.

Recent Home Office data shows a surge in Channel crossings, with 674 migrants arriving in Dover on Tuesday and approximately 180 on Wednesday. The deadly accident adds to over 20 Channel-related deaths this year. Last year, 50 lost their lives attempting the crossing, and the International Organization for Migration noted 2024 as the deadliest year on record, with at least 82 fatalities.

Under pressure to manage growing "irregular" arrivals, the UK government has rolled out a "one in, one out" returns deal with France aimed at curbing crossings. The newly appointed Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has stressed the urgency of addressing the issue and targeting people smugglers, identifying the protection of UK borders as a top priority.

The government faces criticism over refugee housing, with more than 32,000 asylum seekers in hotels as of June. Labour plans to phase out hotel use, while the Conservatives argue previous efforts were lacking. As political tensions rise, the debate over immigration and asylum accommodation continues, highlighting deep-seated challenges and the need for sustainable solutions.

Key Takeaways:

  • Three people, possibly including children, died in a Channel crossing.
  • Over 70 loaded onto the boat; similar incidents see high rescue numbers.
  • UK and France in talks to tackle rising "irregular" Channel crossings.

Tragic as it is. This tells you all you need to know about the mass exodus escaping war torn Countries, like home or France.

How do you overload a 100 man dingy, then you have french navy escorting them, French sar escorted them 12 miles. Then handing them over to the RNLi taxi service and the boarder force, and services from clyde services that then collect the dingys and bring them to Dover!

You missed the sarcasm and irony

An affliction that affects many people. No need to take it personally.
