NATO is ramping up its military presence on its eastern front following an incident where Russian drones breached Polish airspace, indicating a major increase in regional tensions. In the early hours of Wednesday, Polish forces shot down three Russian drones that had intruded into their airspace, while other drones crashed across eastern Poland. Seeking immediate international response, Poland has called for a United Nations Security Council session, scheduled for Friday at 19:00 GMT.

In response to this unprecedented drone incursion, NATO allies, including the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, have pledged to send defences to Poland. Lithuania will host a German brigade to enhance warning systems against Russian attacks on Ukraine that might spill over. Germany has announced plans to increase its military involvement along NATO's eastern borders, expanding air policing missions over Poland. French President Emmanuel Macron disclosed that France would deploy three Rafale fighter jets to bolster Poland’s air protection, stating, "We will not yield to Russia's growing intimidation."

Addressing the Polish Parliament, Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz detailed the military support Poland has received and emphasised concrete actions from allies. Despite previous intrusions into other NATO countries, this incident is the most severe since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. While the Kremlin has declined to comment further, many leaders in Poland and Europe perceive the incursion as a deliberate provocation. Although opinions vary among experts about the intent behind the drones’ paths, NATO and Poland are not dismissing the incident lightly.

NATO’s senior military commander Alexus Grynkewich noted that the intentionality of the act remains unclear, with the exact number of drones infiltrating Polish airspace still being assessed. In precautionary moves, Poland is imposing restrictive measures on its eastern borders with Belarus and Ukraine, while Latvia has closed its eastern airspace for the week.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has offered to train Western militaries to counter Russian aerial threats, advocating a joint air defence shield over Europe. Meanwhile, joint military exercises between Belarus and Russia, called Zapad 2025, are due to commence, prompting Poland to shut its border “for national security reasons.” Russia has criticised Poland’s actions, warning of their impacts on commerce and freedom of movement.
