Why US conservatives see the UK as their worst-case scenario

For many American conservatives, the greatest warning about the future doesn’t come from authoritarian states like Russia or China — it comes from the United Kingdom. Under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the UK has increasingly been framed on the U.S. right as a cautionary tale of cultural decline, unchecked immigration, and the erosion of free speech. At the recent National Conservatism Conference in Washington, speakers portrayed Britain as “already lost.” Nigel Farage, Trump ally and leader of the UK’s Reform Party, even compared his homeland to North Korea during testimony on Capitol Hill. Other right-wing figures, including Steve Bannon and activist Mike Davis, have warned that Britain is facing “civil war” and an “Islamist takeover.”

The flashpoint issue is free speech. Conservatives cite the arrest of comedian Graham Linehan at Heathrow Airport for anti-transgender comments made online as evidence of Britain’s restrictive speech laws. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance echoed the concern earlier this year, warning that “free speech is in retreat” across Europe.

Immigration has become another rallying point, with critics pointing to demographic changes in the UK as a glimpse into America’s future if current policies persist. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said the U.S. is only “this far behind” Britain on such issues, holding his fingers close together.

For decades, Britain has been seen as a political bellwether for America. Margaret Thatcher’s rise preceded Ronald Reagan’s, while Brexit foreshadowed Donald Trump’s 2016 victory. Today, however, American conservatives view the UK not as a model, but as a warning of what could happen if the U.S. follows a similar path.

Still, not all Republicans are alarmed. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) downplayed the issue, saying: “I’m kind of sad for Great Britain, but it’s not my concern.”

Key Takeaways:

  • U.S. conservatives increasingly cite the UK as a warning for America’s future.

  • Free speech restrictions and rising immigration are central concerns.

  • Right-wing leaders blame weak leadership in Britain, contrasting it with Trump’s influence.

Wait til they try mushy pea soup.

Or vinegar crisps...

Us Brits might be going through a bit of a rough patch but America is a terrible place compared to the UK.

Daily mass shootings, conspiracy theorists, fentanyl zombie tent cities, expensive health care, MAGAs, the Orange Clown, high crime and the American people.
