Nearly Half of US 12th Graders Struggle With Math, Report Says

Well, basic teaching went out the window decades ago while parents simply do not care any longer - or do not understand as well, what their kids are all about.

Thailand, copying almost everything from the US, applies the same "education system" by having the children memorizing everything - so they can pass the test at the end of the trimester. Most of that knowledge is learnt by heart but not understood. Never mind the details, the degree is apparently what counts.

Compared to the US, where almost half cannot calculate and one in three hardly can read - guess what? Even there the Thais followed suit; I would assume that 95% of Thai grown-ups lack essential mathematic skills and except the very selected few all others cannot write their own language without a mistake.

The writing is on the wall, instead of studies of "political science" or other fancy titles like "business administration", leaving Thai students with empty hands - except the worthless degree - the Thais would be much better off applying Central European education methods. Take German-speaking Europe as an example. 5% of kindergarteners finish education with a university degree, the remaining 95% are the backbone of the society and economy. Most go through an educational programme of three to four years AFTER formative school years. This additional programme, an apprenticeship, results in professional bakers, painters, builders, mechanics, butchers, administration staff - in short - the works. These apprenticeship programmes are split in ⅓ school time - focussing on the particular subject of their apprenticeship. For i.e. a cook; they are being taught different knives are for what, how to prepare/preserve food, how to cook from scratch without powders, potions, pastes and other processed elements. Preparation of meat is using different board colours to cut to distinguish chicken, pork or fish; sauces are also taught from scratch and the result is, that European graduates of any apprenticeship programme has work, income and satisfaction while being a valuable asset to economy and the financial backbone of a country.

Way to go - and not essentially only down the American alley ..........

Almost everything, including math, science, civics, reading etc. cannot be learned without memorization.

With results like the OP, do you blame them?

The US education system needs to be torn down and rebuilt.  Keep in mind they're talking about seniors, who have spent 12-13 years in the system.  So you can't blame Trump.  But many will anyway.  That's an issue with logic education.

While I know they are trying to shut it down, I do not think they should. I think it should be repurposed such that they do much more testing and generating voluntary standardized learning programs for both in-classroom and home school teaching.

Let the locals worry about what their kids have for lunch.

You only have to look at their idiot president for your answer. He said he was goign to make drugs 1000 to 1500 percent cheaper. Says it all really. If the idiot cannot do math, what show have the rest.

I'm beginning to think trump was adopted, and not really related to "the MIT Uncle".

They can't reform it as long as the leftist teachers' unions control it.  They're no longer educators.  They're indoctrinators.  And they're controlling access to teaching schools to perpetuate that.

Don’t forget that Math was deemed “racist” just a few years ago.

I’d like to see a demographic breakdown of who is failing math and reading.

https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/pittsburgh-public-schools-change-math-instruction-more-equitable/

And they are employing “companies” like this to determine the politically correct way to indoctrinate kids today…

https://www.quetzalec.com

We are a Black and Brown womxn-led educational consulting firm with a national network of teachers, administrators, and community organizers. Through innovative content and approaches, Quetzal supports your antiracist goals to tangibly and impactfully disrupt oppression.

Indeed.

And of course "anti-racist" is simply a euphemism for racism against white people.

Education in the US has become a radical leftist indoctrination system. It needs to be torn down and rebuilt.

Do you think maybe he was talking off the cuff and exaggerating?

People always say bonehead stuff, it does not mean they are stupid. Saying you are going to make something 1% cheaper makes no mathematical sense either. Something would first have to be cheaper to make it 1% cheaper.

But you being a schoolteacher and whatnot know all of this, yes?

Only half ?

What do the other 60% do?

They just don't bother at all. Why would they want to bother learning Maths? They have a smart phone that can tell them everything except how to perform basic functions in their head. Get them off their smart phones, the phones are way smarter than most students anyway, and make them learn.

They absolutely can control it in 90% of the county. Mandatory compliance to receive federal funds.

This REALLY needs to be made an issue for the midterms.

This must have been going on for quite a while. Look at half of the administrations math skills. 😀

A good point, except they only talk about the tearing down part and nothing about the rebuilding part. 😕

Adopted? He's an alien from a species with a very sick sense of humor.

Radical is an understatement.   20 years ago, I started a Masters degree in education and dropped out after the first semester.  In one class, we were told that we should force children to play with toys usually used by the opposite sex.  Little Johnny was supposed to play with dolls and the kitchen toys and the little girls should be given a GI Joe doll and Tonka trucks.

With regards to academics, this was around the start of the No Child Left Behind Act.   I was able to see first hand how classes were being taught when we were taken to local high schools for “observation days”.   The class was taught based upon whatever the dumbest kid in the room was able to understand.  Nobody learned anything, and it was obvious how frustrated the (true) smart kids were.  The average students didn’t care as they didn’t need to do anything and could just futz around with their friends.  It’s no wonder that the Act was scrapped and left up to the states.

And now….here we are.

Most of this is going to come out of woke and inner city clusterfk environments. Still, I expect kids are pretty stupid these days in general judging by what I read on the Internets

Then there's the abusive woke environment. The teachers may have passed their exams but they have long since forgotten whatever may have learned at Lowbrow University. It's all about wasting time and having fun. Math, writing not fun and challenging to teach. Not only that but you need to correct the work and monitor the students. That's a job and those individuals have no interest in doing that. Therefore it's all about who's sucking whose dick what and the color is your hair.

Love that last pic. Angela Merkel, the concocted hero of mainstream media after shutting down their nukes and allowing their country to be invaded by so many people with no interest in assimilation. Remember at the time, media portrayed this image as strong Merkel standing up to the Donald. But now it clearly denotes his amazement that someone could be so dumb and righteous.

Yep, forgot about Trump warning Merkel about Nord Stream 2, but she knew better haha.

Mindless strategic thinking, with that smug posture of helping to save the planet by shutting down their nuclear power stations and replacing with Russian gas, ended up being more coal ha. Breathtaking hypocrisy.

The U.S. Department of Education has revealed alarming statistics: nearly 45% of high school seniors lack essential maths skills, while over 30% fall short in basic reading abilities, according to the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results. These figures represent a concerning decrease to their lowest point in over thirty years, causing significant ripples within the education community and arousing concerns about the future workforce.

I was so disappointed regarding my own reading and math ability when I was young. I have peace of mind now by this topic. 🤔😁

That confirms some of what I've heard from my straight male friends that tried to go into teaching and soon figured out that they wouldn't last through the program.

Edit:  To be accurate, they were friends and classmates of my nieces who did become teachers.  Actually, they became coaches who have to take on some classes in addition to coaching responsibilities.  So they needed teaching credentials.

Yeah, it's a pretty good gig in many parts of the country, but conservatives need not apply.

I think in California, you can't teach K-12 math with a math degree, you have to have an education degree, can't let any non-leftists slip through the cracks....

I just head of a recent report that zero percent of Baltimore highschoolers could do math at grade level.

They probably wouldn’t have been hired after getting the degree either…being straight, (assumably) white males.

It seems like they hide how bad it really is by just using the “at grade level” description.

Ok…so not at 12th grade level.  So….which level?

I’m sure they’re learning the metric system though.

How many people similarly ever use any other school subject after graduating?   It doesn't mean that learning those subjects was wasted time or that knowledge of them isn't ever used in normal everyday life.

I love the poorly educated — Trump, 2016

But he wasn't disparaging them, as your post seems to suggest, he was saying how smart and loyal they were, as a small proportion of all those who voted for him...the evangelicals, the young, the old, the highly educated and the hispanics.

Without considering myself particularly good at math/algebra, I actually found algebra useful when I was running my own business, many years ago, in calculating profit margins etc.  I was quite surprised how algebra became useful all of a sudden!

a Secretary of Education who was formerly a professional wrestling executive should be the right person to boost math performance?

Why wouldn't an educated, successful businesswoman, paralegal, translator and ex-Administrator of the Small Business Administration be suitable for the Sec'y of Ed position?  It is not just about maths.
