Nearly Half of US 12th Graders Struggle With Math, Report Says

You only have to look at their idiot president for your answer. He said he was goign to make drugs 1000 to 1500 percent cheaper. Says it all really. If the idiot cannot do math, what show have the rest.

Hyperbole, obviously.  If you "the idiot" cannot understand that there's not much hope for you.  The US President, or any other leader, come to that does not need to be a maths, or any other subject, superstar.

"If the idiot cannot do math, what show have the rest".

Any chance you could put that into intelligible English while you're calling other people "idiots"?

But he wasn't disparaging them, as your post seems to suggest, he was saying how smart and loyal they were, as a small proportion of all those who voted for him...the evangelicals, the young, the old, the highly educated and the hispanics.

Why did he say it then?
Are those the words of a leader?
It was totally unnecessary — an insult to anyone, especially his own.
It shows exactly what he really thinks of you.

No, it shows what he thinks of you.

The left loves to disparage anyone not in the degreed class.

Already told you why, obviously you have never listened to him when he said that.   He was not insulting them, he was calling them "smart and loyal"  but, if you could read, you'd know that.

This is true. Many people look down on anyone who has not attended college.

In the 1990s, Bill Clinton wanted every kid to attend college and pushed college hard. The result was a massive group of people attending college for the sake of it, resulting in lots of college debt.

We can thank Bill Clitoin for the educational industrial complex.

So, he didn't say he loves the poorly educated?
He said he loves the smart and loyal?

same as in Thailand or many of EU countries.

Why don't you find an in-context quote and we can discuss it?

Gawd...he said he loved all the categories that voted for him that he referenced and that included the highly educated and the poorly educated who are "smart and loyal"  The "smart and loyal" were not mentioned as a separate category.

And a plethora of baristas with degrees.

Looking forward, the education department faces mounting pressure to address these educational deficiencies

Not going to happen under grossly unqualified Linda E. McMahon who is more interested to privatize education. Trump's administration are packed with self serving sycophants who are more interested in self enrichment and power and nothing much for the people. US will have to continue to employed foreign workers from India for the tech industry as the pipeline for domestic qualified workers are haemorrhaging.

Now that explains a lot!!!!!

And spells MATHS correctly. Hey USAers, it is short for MathematicS!

Wonder why, in King's English, it hasn't got an apostrophe to replace the missing letters. .......Math's.

Why is she grossly unqualified?

Lets compare Biden's Education Secretary Miguel Angel Cardona and expose just how unqualified Linda McMcMahon is.

MAC, Bachelor of Science Education, Doctor of education, Commissioner of Connecticut State Department of Education. former teacher and principal and voted 64-33 by the senate.

Linda McMahon, wrestling executive, picked by Trump to be Administrator of Small Business. Barely scraped passed senate with a 51-45 vote.

Is that obvious enough or you still have your blinkers on.

Yeah, good old "Miguel", he and Dr. Jill, two peas in a pod!

And we all know how hard Education degrees are, he must have had to show up for at least half of the true-or-false tests and have gotten at least 40% correct. Initially, he wanted to major basket-weaving, but even with affirmative action, his SAT scores were just too low.

Please tell me one thing you think Dr. Cardona did to improve education in the US during his tenure.

Why do you discount her experience as the CEO of a large organization, and why do you leave off that Linda McMahon has a bachelor’s degree and served on the Connecticut State Board of Education and on the Board of Trustees at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut?

You are just another leftist phony that will say anything about anyone.

I just head of a recent report that zero percent of Baltimore highschoolers could do math at grade level.

Eye herd that two.

Wonder which half they are talking about?

The system is apparently not an obstacle for some ethnic groups which value hard work and education.

I can believe it.

There is only one way to get good at Math...

Just do the exercises and solve the quadratic equations...thousands of times...until...

One can just about solve all simple Math problems without thinking.....

This includes math for Physics, as well.

And, especially TRIG....

Those who are unwilling to do enough problem solving will be destined to struggle with MATH....for LIFE....

I think the issue is keeping all kids on to the twelfth grade when they simply don't have the abilities required. Much better for them to leave school in grade ten and pursue something really useful and much needed like a trade. Don't need a degree for carpentry and brick laying.

The thinking that everyone needs a grade 12 education and go on to university is flawed.

Like the old joke....what does an arts graduate say ....would you like fries with that.

I think the bigger problem is promoting them to the next grade regardless of whether they are qualifies.

These figures represent a concerning decrease to their lowest point in over thirty years

These declines were attributed partly to the impact of COVID-19 school closures.

On the other hand:

"Thai children have struggled with mathematics, as evidenced by their consistently low scores on international assessments like the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2022 and prior years."

And: "Acting Commissioner Matthew Soldner noted that the decline is especially stark among lower-performing students, continuing a downward trend that predates the COVID-19 pandemic."

I think the 30-year comment is suspect. Perhaps the article was AI generated, but does that not read like scores were lower thirty years ago?

Vaccines?

And a Secretary of Education who was formerly a professional wrestling executive should be the right person to boost math performance?

Very true. Many European countries have the trade school concept for students after age like 15.

Not any more, they pass whether they can or not, and move on to the next grade in some schools.   In my hometown school, excellent, one of best in the state, when I went.   Within 3 yrs or so when I graduation, they merged the 4 town to a 'district' school, and one town couldn't pass.

Solution, lower the grade point needed to pass :cheesy:

Within 10 years, same school, district, was 2nd from the bottom, grade rating, drop out rate, drugs & gangs.   I was dating a gal that had 2 kids, and I took them out of it, put them in private school.   What a difference.

Agree that most you learn is useless, unless going the 'trade' route, which was available, get to learn the basic to start a job in the 'trades' instead of prep for college, which most didn't attend.

In all my years with all my children, and grandchildren, I've never seen or heard of a child passing the grade while failing, without going to summer school. Here it's all the time.
