Foreigners rally against BBC's ‘Thailand: the dark side’ doc

This compelling BBC documentary sheds light on the pervasive patriarchy in Thailand. To foster true change, it is crucial for Western women to share their knowledge of feminism, empowerment, and liberation with Thai women. Together, we can challenge and dismantle the structures of patriarchy that hinder progress. The time for transformative action is now.

Patriarchy is not necessarily a bad thing.  Thanks for trying though.

  • The documentary is called "Thaliand: The Dark Side of Paradise" so one assumes it focusses on the negative elements of Thailand (which exist, as in all countries). I don't see how anyone watching was

The misinformation and opportunistic bullying was  annoying. Questioning false claims does not mean one is being paid off. The harshest critics have not seen the production, nor understood that the person they were bashing was the presenter, not the content creator. The mob mentality was so predictable.

The only thing that's said here is that the Thailand's main attraction as a tourist destination are sex and drugs. The resulting body count is high, as we are also in a country that is reckless and violent.

Anything inaccurate?

No, not much inaccuracy there at all, but I was calling out the members who argue otherwise because that's what they do. It's like a knee jerk reaction to the opinions of others, regardless if that other opinion is broadly similar to their own. @rumak has already highlighted their game.

That's because when most Brits get to thailand they become complete drunken arsholes and offend the thai people, they come with their  g strings & boobs hanging out and show no respect for local thai tradition or culture ...they go to tourist thailand (  pattaya & phukett etc. ) and think they witness the real enigma of thailand & spending most of their holidays in bars & discos...thailand has never been colonised, thank God for that..

Before you slag off the Tourists anymore if it wasn't for them where would thais be making money ? fishing ? knee deep im Buffalo s   t and planting Rice. Its still a third world Country where many eat off the floor with there fingers think about that before slagging off people giving them a way out of the Paddies.

Although I hold Thailand, the country and the culture, in extremely high regard....

I hold Farang TOURISTS in extremely LOW regard.

Here is why:

Without a dark side, how can there be a bright side?

It's just fake news.

And that simple fact rents far too much time in people's heads.

You remind me of my pal who would rage when his girlfriend's family would visit from the northeast and sit on the floor on the patio, eating somtam, fish heads and sticky rice with their hands, totally ignoring the expensive, custom-made, teak dining table set in the air-conditioned dining room of his massive pool villa.

He died angry as all get go, but they're still alive. He was English too.

Kipling had it sussed.

Many years ago the Australian authorities stated that more of their citizens die in Thailand than in any other overseas desination.

Ah, so the witless Brits don't have the monopoly on mortal coil shuffling here either. Excellent!

What's amusing is that there will be a small crew with her, probably guys, and it's likely they all went out after wrap and got some of that iniquity they filmed.

"Balanced" I don't want balanced, I want factual, if there is another side of the coin anyone is free to show it. For instance, prostitution is illegal in Thailand, or no one gets drunk between 14:00 and 17:00.

Balanced=factual durgghh!

What are you actually doing in thailand with a depraved, racist comment like that ? You sound like your  suffering some sort of mental health episode...is that why your here, your past country will not accept you, or are they hunting for you ?? You sound like the type of person this documentary was made for, but you are still living here, treating Thais like <deleted> in their own country.. ??

Why do you think Western men prefer Asian women ?? Simple, they don't have the mindset of Western women, and thai women  treat you a hell of a lot better...thats why I married one 10 years ago and she still says she loves me almost  every night

FACT:   AI  is BIASED .   It is programmed according to mainstreet media bias .

My source :  someone who truly attempts to read/ponder  different viewpoints and not be misled by those using ad hominem attacks to cancel opposing experts with high credentials . ....    My source recently stood his ground over the last few years and has learned a lot .   Saved my life .

Very inaccurate.

The main attraction used to be sex and drugs, that was a generation ago.

No wonder, AN members agree - shows their average age.

Things changed about 2000 - 2010, and today Thailand is just a typical mass tourist destination like the Mediterranean of Spain or Greece.

The main attraction is the price (for tourist infrastructure: flights, hotels and restaurants) and the (non-existing) beautiful tropical beaches propagated all over the world. Also important, the exotic flair TAT manages to keep up (isn't it quite an achievement to sell the world 7/11 as something exotic? TAT has pulled it off)

The old sex tourists are still here, but they have become a rather small minority.

Chinese and Russians never came for the sex, anyway. European tourists nowadays go to Samui and Phuket/Khao Lak, not so much to Pattaya.

You are right calling Thailand reckless and violent.

On a recent trip to Lao I saw a lot of farang women tourists wearing "hot pants" and "spaghetti" string tops exposing a lot of flesh. Yes it was hot but contrasts to the local Lao women who dress conservatively. And maybe these farang women attract unwanted attention from local Lao men- "only Lao prostitutes dress like these farang women". When in Rome the saying goes, so dress conservatively like the locals. Men, don't go walking around in public topless. Even wear longs when in public, especially in a urban environments.

Have you ever noticed what Thai women in Bangkok nowadays wear?

Its not 1985 anymore.
