A Bangladeshi father-of-nine living on disability benefits is refusing to leave a retirement housing complex, insisting he will use human rights laws to fight eviction unless the council provides a larger home for his family.

Shahidul Haque, 59, who claims benefits for sleep apnea and depression, moved into David Smith Court, a retirement block for over-55s, last July. Just months later, he brought in his 28-year-old wife, Jakia Sultana Monni, and their three-year-old twin daughters, despite the complex being reserved for elderly residents.

Haque says he did not understand the tenancy rules due to his limited English skills and now insists he cannot move out without being offered suitable family accommodation.

The case has sparked local controversy over housing allocation, with critics questioning how a retirement home was allocated in the first place and whether taxpayer-funded benefits should cover families in such circumstances.

Key Takeaways:

  • Shahidul Haque, 59, lives in a retirement home with his wife and twin daughters.

  • He claims he didn’t understand tenancy rules due to poor English skills.

  • Haque vows to fight eviction under human rights law unless given a larger home.
