Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Tower, set to become the world’s tallest skyscraper at 3,281 feet, has faced a major setback after engineers discovered critical structural flaws at 2,000 feet.

The project, initially paused multiple times, was hailed as a symbol of architectural innovation and economic ambition, designed to surpass Dubai’s Burj Khalifa by 564 feet and redefine the Jeddah skyline.

Developed by the Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), the tower had resumed construction after reaching just over 40% completion. As of January 2025, roughly 60 of the planned 157 floors were built. The developer had projected a four-to-five-year timeline for completion, actively engaging contractors to ensure progress. However, recent inspections revealed concrete cracks at significant heights, forcing a temporary halt to construction. Engineers are now reassessing the structural integrity and determining the necessary remediation measures to safeguard the tower’s design and long-term stability.

Despite these challenges, the JEC remains committed to completing the project. The resumption of construction, selection of new contractors, and strict oversight reflect Saudi Arabia’s determination to deliver one of the most ambitious engineering feats in history. Once completed, the Jeddah Tower will not only be the tallest building globally but also serve as a symbol of the kingdom’s architectural and economic ambitions, attracting global attention and investment.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Structural flaws at 2,000 feet have temporarily halted Jeddah Tower’s construction.

  2. The tower is planned to reach 3,281 feet, surpassing the Burj Khalifa by 564 feet.

  3. Completion is projected in four to five years, with new contractors being engaged to ensure safety and progress.

So structural flaws they're going to fix. I'm glad I'm not in the market for a Jeddah apartment.
