Tony Blair Eyes Leading Post-War Gaza Transition

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is reportedly in discussions to lead a post-war transitional authority in Gaza. Backed by the White House, the plan would involve Blair heading a governing body, supported by the UN and Gulf nations, before eventually transferring control back to Palestinians. His office emphasised that any proposal would not displace Gaza's residents.

Blair's involvement includes high-level talks with the US and other parties about Gaza's future. Notably, he attended an August meeting at the White House with US President Donald Trump and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. The Economist and Israeli outlets suggest Blair might lead the Gaza International Transitional Authority (GITA), intended to be Gaza's "supreme political and legal authority" for a five-year term.

GITA would be modelled on prior transitions in East Timor and Kosovo and would initially operate from Egypt before moving into Gaza once stability is ensured. Blair, who served as the Middle East envoy for the Quartet after his tenure as Prime Minister, has previously focused on creating conditions for a two-state solution in Palestine.

This development follows Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's declaration of readiness to work with Trump and other global leaders towards a two-state peace plan. Abbas continues to reject any future governing role for Hamas in Gaza, insistently calling for their disarmament.

Further proposals for Gaza's future have been presented, including a rejected US plan for long-term control and an Arab reconstruction proposal that received welcome from Palestinian bodies but not from the US or Israel.

Looking ahead, discussions continue as global leaders seek solutions for Gaza's governance. A French and Saudi-led international conference proposed a transitional committee under the Palestinian Authority, receiving backing from the UN General Assembly earlier this month. Meanwhile, tensions remain high following Israel's military campaign in response to attacks led by Hamas.

Key Takeaways

  • Tony Blair is involved in discussions to lead a Gaza transitional authority.
  • The proposal is supported by the White House, UN, and Gulf nations.
  • Plans modelled on East Timor and Kosovo transitions include a multinational force.

Never met a politician with a tongue browner than his. Sonnyboy Blair has always managed to be on the bright side of seriously overpaid assignments on the political stage avoiding shadows and remaining in the lime light.

What an unintelligent comment. For the record I was against the war and didn't believe the wmd lies at the time. Blair destabilised the whole region and made many dangerous enemies. The man is evil.

Yet you dislike immigrant Muslims and support Netanyahu. Not me who is ignorant.

The international community is on the verge of a peace deal for Gaza as it faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, the UK’s Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has revealed.

Ms Cooper’s comments follow her address at the UN General Assembly in New York earlier this week, where she accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of allowing children in Gaza to die of starvation.

“I feel like there is a consensus, a real, huge consensus building, and there was real energy and determination [at the UN] around peace. I think we’ve reached a moment where the world wants to end this war,” she told The Guardian.

An ignorant comment in itself.

According to the OP, snipped from the post,

Blair's involvement includes high-level talks with the US and other parties about Gaza's future. Notably, he attended an August meeting at the White House with US President Donald Trump and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

I wonder IF he even bothered to speak to any Palestinian?

Or did he only speak to Trump and Trump's bootlicker, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

Ceasefire talks have stalled since Israel’s widely condemned strike in Doha, but in Monday’s White House meeting, Mr Trump is expected to share a new 21-point proposal for an immediate ceasefire.

Mr Trump’s proposal would include the release of all hostages within 48 hours and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian enclave, according to three Arab officials briefed on the plan.

The president discussed the proposal, which is not final, with Arab leaders in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Anything that slimebag might get involved in would go south PDQ.

ABU DHABI (Reuters) -The UAE is pressing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace proposal at their meeting on Monday and to abandon any plan to annex the West Bank, a delegate with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The United Arab Emirates, the most prominent Arab country to normalise ties with Israel under the Abraham Accords, warned Netanyahu that annexation would shut the door to further Israeli normalisation with leading Arab and Muslim nations, including Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, the delegate added.

The Israeli leader faces pressure to annex the West Bank from far-right politicians who want to extend sovereignty over the area and snuff out hopes for a Palestinian state.

Donald Trump will run Gaza with the assistance of Sir Tony Blair as part of the US president’s 20-point plan to end the war.

Mr Trump will oversee the transitional governance of Gaza as the head of a new body called the Board of Peace, which Sir Tony will also sit on, the White House announced.

“Gaza will be governed under the temporary transitional governance of a technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee, responsible for delivering the day-to-day running of public services and municipalities for the people in Gaza,” the plan reads.
