The Cambodian military has issued a formal denial following explosive allegations that the bodies of fallen soldiers were left unburied in a forest, sparking public outrage and online debate.

The claims originated from political analyst and social media influencer Kim Sok, who posted on Facebook that the Hun Sen and Hun Manet administration had not only failed to recover the bodies of its soldiers, but also pressured grieving families into silence. His post, shared with over 110,000 followers, accused the government of neglect and intimidation.

In response, the Cambodian army’s Commander-in-Chief released a statement on 26 September, firmly rejecting the accusations. The statement, broadcast by Amarin TV, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to national duty and respect for its personnel.

Quoting Article 8 of the law governing the Supreme Command, the army emphasised its role in safeguarding sovereignty and coordinating all branches of the armed forces. It described the Military Security Committee as central to maintaining readiness and supporting lawful government operations.

“The Supreme Command therefore requests the public nationwide to fully cooperate… to maintain national peace, security and prosperity,” the statement concluded.

The controversy has stirred strong reactions in Cambodia and beyond, with many questioning the veracity of the claims and the transparency of military procedures. While no independent verification has yet emerged, the issue has reignited concerns over civil-military relations and freedom of expression in the country.

As the story continues to unfold, observers are watching closely for further clarification—or escalation.
