Belarus has issued a stark warning at the United Nations, claiming the world is “one minute to doomsday” as it receives advanced Russian nuclear-capable missiles capable of striking London within eight minutes.

Speaking in New York, Belarusian foreign minister Maxim Ryzhenkov declared the planet is closer than ever to nuclear catastrophe, citing the symbolic Doomsday Clock, currently set at 89 seconds to midnight. He accused the West of escalating tensions through rearmament, while boasting that Belarus now possesses “monstrous destructive power” through Russian weaponry.

The missiles in question are Oreshnik intermediate-range systems, which President Alexander Lukashenko recently confirmed are being transferred from Moscow to Belarus. A massive military base—covering an area the size of 280 football pitches—is under construction near Minsk to house the weapons. Lukashenko, a close ally of Vladimir Putin, said the system is “on its way” despite delays.

Russia has previously stationed nuclear-capable Iskander-M missiles in Belarus, but the Oreshnik significantly increases strike range and speed. Putin has only tested the weapon once, in November 2024, during an attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

Belarus borders three NATO states—Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia—placing the missiles close to the alliance’s eastern flank. In response, NATO staged a major exercise in the North Sea, deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group with 10,000 personnel from 13 countries. The drills came amid heightened Russian provocations, including low-altitude flyovers and suspected drone disruptions in Europe.

The developments underscore escalating nuclear brinkmanship between Russia and the West, with Belarus serving as a forward base for Moscow’s arsenal.

Key Takeaways

  • Doomsday warning: Belarus claims the world is closer than ever to nuclear catastrophe.
  • New missiles: Russian Oreshnik systems stationed in Belarus can hit London in 8 minutes.
  • NATO response: Alliance launched massive military drills after Russian provocations.
