Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s most iconic temple, is fast becoming one of the world’s most popular destinations for marriage proposals, blending ancient grandeur with modern romance in a way few places can rival.

In recent months, social media platforms have been flooded with emotional clips of couples proposing at sunrise in front of the temple’s majestic silhouette. TikTok, Instagram and Facebook are awash with scenes of teary-eyed embraces and heartfelt declarations, turning the UNESCO World Heritage site into a viral symbol of love.

According to Booking.com data, nearly 70% of bookings in Siem Reap last quarter were made by couples, confirming the city’s growing reputation not just as a cultural treasure but as a premier romantic getaway in Asia. The Cambodia Tourism Board has embraced the trend, noting Angkor Wat’s cinematic legacy — including its haunting appearance in Wong Kar-Wai’s In the Mood for Love — and its deep roots in Khmer folklore.

Beyond the central temple, surrounding sites like Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm are increasingly featured in pre-wedding shoots, offering couples varied backdrops that evoke endurance, serenity and timeless commitment. The temple’s allure lies not only in its architecture but in its symbolism — a place where history, spirituality and personal milestones converge.

Vivian Goh, a tourism consultant based in Singapore, told Khmer Times the trend could redefine Cambodia’s tourism strategy. “If this gathers momentum, Siem Reap could join the likes of Santorini, Paris and Bali as a top-tier destination for proposals and weddings,” she said.

Cambodia is now positioning itself in the global destination wedding market, with Angkor Wat as its crown jewel. For many couples, a proposal here is more than a romantic gesture — it’s a moment etched into the stone of history.
