Two Delta Air Lines regional jets collided on the runway at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday night, leaving one passenger with minor injuries and raising fresh concerns about aviation safety.

The incident occurred at around 9:56 p.m. when two Endeavor Air-operated Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft, both affiliated with Delta, made contact while taxiing at low speed. Video and photos from the scene show significant damage, including a detached wing and a damaged nose cone on one of the planes.

A spokesperson for LaGuardia Airport confirmed that a passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital as a precaution. The spokesperson added that one of the jets had just landed from Charlotte (CLT) and was taxiing to its gate when it was struck by another Delta regional aircraft.

Passengers were evacuated directly onto the taxiway and then taken by bus to Terminal C. Those scheduled to depart on the damaged planes will be rebooked on alternative flights. Despite the crash, airport operations continued without disruption.

The collision comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), where staffing cuts have raised alarm over potential safety risks at airports nationwide. FAA employees have warned that reduced support staff could jeopardize air traffic safety, with one anonymous source saying, “Without our team, pilots would quite literally be flying blind.”

Earlier this year, a deadly collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport claimed 67 lives, underscoring the ongoing concerns about air travel safety in the U.S.

Authorities are investigating the LaGuardia collision to determine the cause and assess any broader safety implications.

Key Takeaways:

  • Two Delta regional jets collided at LaGuardia, injuring one passenger.

  • Passengers were safely evacuated and rebooked, with no wider flight delays.

  • The crash highlights growing concerns over FAA staffing cuts and airport safety.
