Israel, Hamas Move Toward Trump’s Gaza Peace Agreement

Israel and Hamas have both signaled readiness to move forward with U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza peace plan, raising hopes for a breakthrough after months of failed negotiations.

On Saturday, Israel’s prime minister’s office announced it was prepared to “immediately implement” the first phase of Trump’s plan following a similar statement from Hamas. Hours earlier, Hamas said it was willing to begin negotiations “immediately” for the release of hostages under the proposal, though it stopped short of accepting the plan outright.

“In light of Hamas’s response, Israel is preparing to immediately implement the first phase of Trump’s plan for the immediate release of all hostages,” Israel’s statement said, adding that it would coordinate closely with Trump’s team. The statement notably did not address Trump’s demand that Israel halt bombing Gaza as part of the deal.

Hamas, in its response through mediators, said it was prepared to release hostages and hand governance of Gaza to a technocratic Palestinian authority backed by Arab and Islamic states.

Trump, who had issued an ultimatum for Hamas to respond by Sunday, welcomed the announcements. “I believe Hamas is ready for a lasting PEACE,” he wrote on Truth Social, while urging Israel to suspend its bombardment to allow safe extraction of hostages.

The first phase of Trump’s plan calls for the release of the remaining 48 hostages within 72 hours and Hamas’s agreement to transfer power in Gaza — conditions many analysts believed would be rejected outright. Both sides’ willingness to consider the framework marks the most significant movement toward a potential resolution in months, though major sticking points remain unresolved.

Key Takeaways

  • Israel and Hamas signaled readiness to act on Trump’s Gaza peace plan.

  • Hamas agreed to negotiate on hostages and governance of Gaza.
