Israel Fears Hamas Can't Return All Deceased Hostages

Israel assesses that Hamas might struggle to return all deceased hostages in Gaza, potentially complicating peace deal efforts. Israeli sources reveal concerns about Hamas's ability to locate the remains of the 28 deceased hostages. It is believed a number, estimated between seven and fifteen, may not be recoverable.

These assessments are grounded in Israeli intelligence, as well as communication from Hamas and intermediaries during negotiations. The discrepancy in estimates remains unclear but underscores the complexities involved in reaching an agreement. Currently, 20 hostages are believed to be alive, with two in critical condition.

In ongoing negotiations in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, Israel insists on the return of all hostages, living or dead, as a fundamental condition for ending the conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet have long been aware of the challenges Hamas faces regarding the deceased hostages. CNN has sought comment from the Israeli government.

The United States, informed for some time, acknowledges that some hostages are held by factions beyond Hamas's control. Barbara Leaf, Assistant Secretary of State for Middle Eastern Affairs, emphasised the difficulty in recovering some remains while noting the likelihood of recovering living hostages.

The current uncertainty could influence the Egyptian talks. Israeli sources maintain that Hamas is responsible for all deceased hostages, expecting their return despite challenges. Some believe Hamas might delay ceasefire arrangements until Israel agrees to military withdrawal from Gaza, using the situation as leverage.

There is also concern that Netanyahu could use this uncertainty to influence negotiations, a charge levelled by political opponents and hostage families. They allege he imposes political conditions to stall agreements. Nevertheless, due to US and regional pressures, Netanyahu is expected to use the issue for negotiating leverage rather than jeopardising talks.

The scenario is especially sensitive in Israel, evoking memories of previous unresolved missing soldier cases. Lieutenant Hadar Goldin’s body, taken by Hamas in 2014, and Ron Arad’s decades-old unresolved disappearance highlight the enduring pain and commitment to returning all. Netanyahu’s confidant Natan Eshel hinted that some hostages might never return, likening them to Arad.

Key Takeaways

  • Israel assesses that Hamas may not locate or return all deceased hostages.
  • The US and Israel both acknowledge challenges in recovering certain hostages.
  • Ongoing negotiations in Egypt hinge on the release of all hostages.

Not surprised in the least the IDF has blown that place to hell.

I suspect there are in excess of 100,000 bodies unaccounted for under that rubble.

Reading the latest media releases on this they are parking this for now to move one step forward.  I can't imaging how the families are feeling just now.

I'm amazed any of them hostages are still alive,

This will probably be used by Israel to void the entire deal with Hamas. I'm sure they will want an excuse to do that. 😞
