Former Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has been charged with four counts of rape and multiple counts of indecent and sexual assault, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police. The 68-year-old is facing charges related to offences involving seven women, with allegations dating from 1983 to 2016. Westwood is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 10 November.

 

The charges Include several incidents, such as the one in 1983 where a 17-year-old was allegedly involved in indecent behaviour. A woman in her 20s was assaulted in Fulham, and another woman faced similar accusations in Vauxhall in 1986. Between 1995 and 1996, a female aged 17 to 18 was reportedly raped and indecently assaulted. In London, allegations from 2000-2001 involve the rape and assault of another young woman in the city.

 

Further charges stem from 2010, where a woman in her 20s was allegedly raped in London, and another was sexually assaulted in Stroud. In 2016, an alleged sexual assault occurred in Finchley. The Crown Prosecution Service, represented by Chief Crown Prosecutor Lionel Idan, asserts that the evidence is sufficient to proceed with a trial, stressing the importance of a fair trial and cautioning against prejudicial commentary.

 

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police continues to seek further witnesses, acknowledging the bravery required to report such allegations. Westwood, a notable figure in the UK's hip-hop scene, initially gained attention with his Radio 1 rap show starting in 1994. In 2022, following a BBC News and Guardian investigation, he faced accusations from 18 women spanning 1992 to 2017. Westwood has denied any misconduct.
