Emotional Reunions As Freed Israeli Hostages Return Home

RE’IM, Israel — Freed Israeli hostages were reunited with their families in scenes of joy and heartbreak on Monday after two years of captivity under Hamas. Emotional videos from the military base in Re’im near the Gaza border showed tearful embraces, cries of relief, and long-awaited family reunions.

The final 20 living hostages were released as part of a fragile ceasefire deal, following a limited withdrawal by the Israel Defense Forces from parts of Gaza. The exchange, mediated by international officials and facilitated by the Red Cross, came ahead of planned talks on Gaza’s long-term governance and security.

Each freed hostage was first transferred by Red Cross vehicles to Israeli custody before being flown or driven to the Re’im base. There, relatives gathered in anticipation — many holding flowers, flags, and photos — as buses carrying the returnees arrived under heavy security.

For some, the first moments back were overwhelming. Videos shared by Israeli media showed sobbing reunions, with children running into parents’ arms and soldiers standing silently nearby. Families were later escorted to hospitals, where the freed hostages will undergo medical checks, psychological assessments, and begin long-term rehabilitation.

Footage also captured relatives of hostages Avinatan Or and Evyatar David cheering ecstatically as the names of those freed were confirmed. Witnesses said many of the returnees appeared in “decent physical condition,” though Israeli officials cautioned that the emotional recovery ahead will be far longer.

The hostages’ return marks a symbolic milestone in a brutal two-year ordeal that has shaped both Israeli politics and public sentiment since the October 2023 Hamas attack that triggered the war. For the families, however, the moment was less about politics and more about survival — a long-delayed homecoming that few dared to believe would come.

Key takeaways:

  • Freed Israeli hostages reunited with families at Re’im base after two years in Hamas captivity.

  • The final 20 living hostages were released amid a ceasefire and Israeli troop pullback from Gaza.

  • Emotional scenes marked the reunions, with hostages now beginning medical and psychological rehabilitation.
