A Thai woman and her Australian husband claim a police officer extorted 20,000 baht from them in Pattaya on October 13. Mint, the 25-year-old Thai woman, recounted the alleged incident while seeking to reclaim the money. According to her, the situation unfolded at Mueang Pattaya Police Station when her husband was detained for allegedly not paying a bar bill.

Mint was informed by police that her husband had an unpaid bill of 6,464 baht from Soi Buakhao. When she arrived at the station, she was approached by a man dressed in police-style garments, who told her that her husband was in custody. The man offered to settle the situation for 20,000 baht, which Mint managed to negotiate down to 15,000 baht.

After Mint withdrew the cash from a nearby ATM, the man took the money without giving any receipt or documentation. Her husband was then released without an official record of any charges. This was not the first instance, as Mint mentioned a similar event two weeks prior when a man in a police vest demanded 20,000 baht over another alleged unpaid bill.

The couple fears they might be victims of fake officers and have turned to the media for assistance. Currently, there has been no official response from the officers at Mueang Pattaya Police Station regarding these allegations.

Key Takeaways

  • A Thai woman accuses Pattaya police of extorting 20,000 baht.
  • Multiple incidents reported with alleged fake officers involved.
  • No official statement yet from Mueang Pattaya Police Station.

I would worry more about her husband's criminal and strange habit of doing a runner!

There's a moral in this story...:coffee1:

This happens multiple times daily across Thailand. It's how the BIB system works. I've told this story before but a friend of mine had his mountain bike stolen. He went to the BIB. BIB said hand over 6K and we'll investigate.

A family friendly extortion.

I think the bigger problem is her husband not paying bar bills. If he did there would be no "extortion".

I too have been extorted numerous times in Pattaya.... apparently breaking the law is frowned upon!

The prices those bar girls charge nowadays is extortion.

How could there be a fake police officer in a police station?

Over 6000 Baht of drinks in one night. How many drinks is that?

Atleast a dozen or so.

A check bin gets fat quick if the bell gets rung.

Thats a good wife that still pays for him to be released after spending their money on bargirls

So he has a Thai wife and he's ringing bells and buying drinks for a bunch of girls in bars?

Wow.

Yeah like wtf? Let him rot in jail

So moral of the story pay your bills and stay under the radar and all is well.

Maybe a little here and there at a checkpoint but cheap in comparison.

You need to understand the process at the Police Station.  Bring them a water or Coke to drink.  Ask for assistance.  Give them an amount equal to their efforts, laugh, joke with them and you will get a lot more out of the Police.

Consider they are doing you a favor not we are paying your salary and you work for me

Hmm, sorry sounds like total BS.

Police are never corrupt in thailand what is she talking about 😂

Dumb move. The next time he doesn't pay his bill, his wife won't be able to bribe him out with no charges. Also would be dumb to rat out the police or whoever handles the bribes after accepting their alleged extortion services if they are planning to continue living in Pattaya. You don't get much dumber than these two.

Exactly....

Breaking the law, being offered a way out, then ratting is the worst. Next time he will face jail.

From the report, it appears that they (she) may be the victim of her serial non-bill-paying husband...if he'd paid his bills they'd be B35,000 better off.

There is no evidence that he done a runner.

From reading this article all I see is a crazy couple. I mean really CRAZY!! This couple, especially Mint, are spending way too much time at the police station. They need to get away from the police as far possible, What's this I didn't get a receipt for my bribe. Are you serious?? Crazy.

Only evidence that he didn't pay his bills.  There's a difference?

So did he pay his bill in the end or did she just pay 15k to get him out of jail and he just forgot about the bill 🤔

Something wrong with both the Aussie, and his Thai wife. Clearly neither of them are very smart. He should learn to pay his bar bills and she, as a Thai, should know that she should shut her mouth once a deal has been agreed with the police.

A reminder. The lower ranks of the Thai police are lowly paid. The thinking is that to pay them more would mean that they would do little work and would sit around all day drinking. Hence they have to work in order to obtain off the record tips from offenders.

So far I have two thumbs down for this. My message to those are you obviously have no idea, you're denying reality or your simply trolling the thumbs down. The BIB is corrupt to the core. Here's another example. Friend got done being over the limit. His choice was handover 10k or go to court. This was Friday night so he would have been locked up for the weekend before appearing in court on the Monday. This happened. I was there.

The bar tab is a non-issue if the police accept a fine. I think they typically tell the establishment to write it off as a loss (or just don't say anything).

S-i-L had car stolen; family member arrested the thief.  I drove them all to Dong Tang cop shop.  Fat desk sergeant wanted 10K.  S-i-L paid a bank loan for 4  years with no car!
