Boris Johnson Put NHS Before Children, Covid Inquiry Hears

Former Education Secretary Gavin Williamson delivered a scathing critique of the Covid inquiry, alleging that Boris Johnson's government prioritised the NHS over the welfare of children during the school closure decision in January 2021. He described an approach to school closures that he compared to “smashing a Ming vase on the floor to get people’s attention,” suggesting a lack of seriousness in governmental decision-making. This session of the inquiry looks specifically into Covid's impact on the younger generation.

Williamson’s testimony included his claim that he thought he had secured agreement for schools to remain open early in 2021, only for changing events to upend those plans. He referenced a profane message sent to Johnson, criticising the government decision to shut schools shortly after reopening, marking it as one of several discordances with the prime minister. He also addressed failed promises of a phased return to schools in 2020 which were undermined by prevailing social distancing rules.

Reflecting on the broader Covid response, Williamson admitted regrets over inadequate planning for school shutdowns and the belated development of a closure strategy announced in March 2020.

He apologised for not closely considering scientific data and suggested that the need for Downing Street's approval constrained the preparation for school closures. Headteachers, he noted, began independently planning weeks in advance of the government's announcement.

The inquiry spotlighted differing preparations, with headteachers like Lyndon Lewis and Sir Jon Coles sharing their proactive efforts to brace for closures. Sir Jon Coles expressed shock at Williamson's claims of lacking a governmental plan, while Williamson refuted allegations of "dereliction of duty", although acknowledging ungrasped challenges.

This session also scrutinised the exams turmoil of August 2020 when the government reversed its grading model decision post-cancellations. Williamson foresaw potential unfairness in grades but ultimately blamed Ofqual for resisting teacher-assessed grading. This section of the inquiry examines if children's and young people's needs were adequately considered during critical government choices.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gavin Williamson accused Johnson’s government of sidelining children’s interests in favour of NHS priorities during Covid.
  • Williamson expressed regret over insufficient planning for school closures and the subsequent exams grading issues.
  • The inquiry is probing if children were properly factored into key governmental Covid-related decisions.

I lived though COVID in a part of China that had no lockdowns whatsoever because the Government here generally got it right.  They had plenty of other restrictions that were generally well supported, indeed most deaths came in clusters that, when investigated, were started by someone not following the restrictions in place.  Amongst the expats and locals here, the UK was a complete laughing stock with Boris the Buffoon totally out of his depth.  That idiot really should be in jail for manslaughter through gross negligence; so many whole avoidable deaths.
