Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso has announced the drafting of a new city ordinance requiring businesses with ten or more employees to have at least one certified first aider on staff. This decision was revealed during a board meeting of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Manila Chapter on October 15. Domagoso emphasized that such measures are crucial not only for major disasters but also for everyday emergencies.

The directive is part of a broader push for workplace safety and preparedness in Manila. The proposed "10 is to 1" ratio ensures that in any business setting, there must be someone trained to handle medical emergencies. The mayor reiterated the importance of proactive safety measures, stating that having trained personnel can save lives daily.

"If we have 10 employees, mag-10 is to 1 tayo," Domagoso stated, urging businesses to comply with the new regulation upon hiring or employing ten or more people. He instructed departments to complete the ordinance, emphasizing that having a certified first aider must be a prerequisite for obtaining or renewing business permits.

This initiative highlights the city’s commitment to enhancing disaster resilience. By mandating first aid certification, Manila aims to ensure that workplaces are better equipped to respond to emergencies. This aligns with broader efforts to create a safer environment in a city prone to various risks.

Looking ahead, the ordinance is expected to be finalized soon, with details to be disseminated to businesses across Manila. The implementation will likely involve partnerships with organizations like the Philippine Red Cross for training programs. Businesses will need to comply with these requirements as part of their operational procedures.
