Veterinarians at the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Development Centre in Suphan Buri have reported continued improvement in the condition of “Khaotom,” a young female wild elephant rescued after becoming separated from her herd and sustaining injuries. The calf is now eating and drinking normally, passing clear urine in good volume, and showing better overall health, though her stool remains semi-liquid.

On 18 October, veterinary staff released an update confirming that Khaotom’s recovery is progressing positively. The team has been carefully monitoring her diet and hydration, ensuring she continues to gain strength after her rescue from the forest. Her general condition has stabilised and her digestive system is responding well to ongoing treatment.

Dr. Nattanon Panpetch, senior veterinarian and head of the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Sanctuary, explained that the team has been administering probiotics and cold-pressed coconut oil to restore gut balance and improve digestion. He added that wounds around the navel are drying well, while necrotic tissue and pus around the genital area have decreased significantly. Similarly, inflammation near the toenails has reduced, and abrasions on other parts of the body are showing good signs of healing.

Khaotom has also regained partial mobility, managing to push herself upright at times with assistance from staff. Veterinarians and caretakers continue to support her recovery with regular physiotherapy, including ankle stretching, ultrasound therapy, electrical muscle stimulation and alternating use of supportive leg braces during rest periods.

The wildlife centre confirmed that Khaotom remains under close observation around the clock, with both veterinary and animal care teams ensuring her comfort and monitoring for any complications. Officials expressed optimism that with continued care, she will make a full recovery before eventually being reintroduced to a suitable environment.
