China Has Spent Years Preparing for the Iran Oil Crisis

The turmoil in the global energy market from war in the Middle East is exactly the sort of emergency scenario that China has long been preparing for.

Worried that conflict in the region could wreak havoc on its economy by cutting off the supply of oil, Beijing has been spending lavishly to limit how much it needs to import, while building up large stockpiles and diversifying where it gets its energy from.

The Iran war has brought many of those fears to fruition, serving as the biggest test yet of China’s bid to fortify its economy against what it views as reckless behavior by the U.S.

I guess the Chinese will have to take meager consolation from the fact that:

They've stored about 1.2 billion barrels of oil

They actually have widely diversifed sources for oil and natural gas

They have massively expanded their reliance on renewables. Consumption of gasoline and diesel in China has actually declined as electric vehicles are rapidly displacing sales of internal combustion engines

It has actually increased its own domestic oil production

I bet countries like Japan and South Korea are chuckling over Trump's sick burn. Despite the fact that they are far more dependent on the mideast for oil than is China. They probably think it's worth it to have such an entertaining ally even if it's conduct damages their economies.

Early after Xi Jinping's rise to the Presidency in 2013, he ordered comprehensive studies to be done on China's security. Apart from issues around geo-political and cyber security, two elements of high security remain energy and food security.

There were a couple of reports last week that Xi has banned China's exporting any energy resources.

I doubt Dr Xi (he does have a PhD) would send Chinese war/defense resources into the conflict zone to protect US interests, especially as China's is allied with Iran.

Once again Trump shows his ignorance.

With 1.2 or so billion people 1 barrel per person doesnt seem too much though.

If all or most of China's oil came from the mideast that would be an excellent point.

“Many Countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe,” he wrote in his latest post. He gave little detail beyond saying he hoped China, France, Japan, South Korea and the UK would also send warships.

He stated that even though Iran’s military was “already destroyed 100%,” it was “easy” for Tehran to continue threatening ships with drones, mines and short-range missiles.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/trump-calls-countries-send-warships-184217276.html

In other words, nobody has answered his cry for help. And how does a 100% destroyed military fires missiles?

Wasn't the point about the strategy of stockpiling ?

Yes, the point y was in general about the strategy of stockpiling. But the specific point you made about China's stockpiling was this:

Actually, the one country that is still getting its oil exports through the Straits of Hormuz is Iran. And apparently at pretty much the same pace as before the war.

I've since looked more closely at this issue. Was it a troll? Or was Trump begging? And you'll note that Trump didn't ask other countries to join the United States in accompanying ships through the Strait. Which isn't surprising since the US forces so far haven't dared to do so.

That all depends on what percentage of imported oil it's intended to replace. I read in the Wall Street Journal, that China has enough of a stockpile to last for 200 days. And of course, now, given that Russia has been given the green light by Trump to export as much oil as it can, that along with Iran's continuing exports looks to me like China is sitting pretty.

Other countries that the US used to treat as allies, a lot less so.

I don't think China worries much about their oil imports

Why China can withstand oil’s surge past $100 more easily than other countries

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/09/china-oil-shock-iran-war-hormuz-energy-transition.html

“China has accumulated one of the world’s largest strategic and commercial crude reserves,” the analysts said, adding that its “rapid transition toward electric vehicles and renewable energy provides an additional structural hedge.”

China held an estimated 1.2 billion barrels of onshore crude stockpiles as of January.

That’s about 3 to 4 months of reserves, which will delay the economic impact, Rush Doshi, director of the China Strategy Initiative at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia.”

However, oil shipments through the strait account for only 6.6% of China’s overall energy consumption, according to Nomura’s chief China economist Ting Lu.

Iran sends millions of oil barrels to China through Strait of Hormuz even as war chokes the waterway

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/11/iran-ships-oil-china-strait-hormuz-closure-.html\

Iran has continued to send large amounts of crude oil via the Strait of Hormuz to China even as the war between U.S.-Israel and Iran has jeopardized broader supplies through the critical waterway.

Iran has sent at least 11.7 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz since the war began on Feb. 28, all of which were headed to China, Samir Madani, co-founder of TankerTrackers.com, told CNBC on Tuesday.

“China has proactively built up its strategic petroleum reserves to approximately 1.5 billion barrels, enough to cover around 200 days of oil imports, according to Michael Haigh, head of commodities research at Société Générale.”

If I made a mess when I was a child, I had to clean it up myself.

Seems like Trump was never taught that lesson. He wants everyone to help him clean up the mess of his short-term thinking.

IMO other nations are getting pretty tired of American adventurism.

Comedian Tim Dillon, an influencer with a wide male fanbase who advocated hard for President Donald Trump during the election but has grown more critical of the president in recent months, weighed in on the Iran issue in a recent podcast.

Specifically, the "manosphere" influencer said of Trump, "He's at the end of his life. He's endorsing Jake Paul for president. He doesn't care about what happens next. That's the thing with Donald Trump, he doesn't really care about what happens next…Trump is just kind of on a farewell tour."

He went on to beg Trump insiders to tell the president anything they need to tell him in order to get him to halt the sprawling war. "Tell him that!" he said. "Whatever this dude needs to hear, so that he can get us the f--- out of there."

MAGA podcaster claims Trump simply 'doesn't care' anymore as he nears end of his life
