In a stunning victory, the Bhumjaithai Party won the Kanchanaburi by-election held on Sunday, October 19, defeating its sole competitor, the Pheu Thai Party. According to the Provincial Election Commission Office at 8:40 p.m., Bhumjaithai's candidate, Wisuda Wichiansilp, secured 52,807 votes, outpacing Pheu Thai's Gen. Chinwat Maendej by more than 16,000 votes, who managed 35,964 votes.

This electoral battle, despite its intensity, was conducted within the legal limits, with Election Commission Secretary-General Sawaeng Boonmee confirming that no complaints were filed. The victory was expected for Bhumjaithai, cementing their strong presence in the region. Wisuda, 30, also known by her nickname Dream, follows in the footsteps of her father, Sakda Wichiansilp, a former lawmaker and current deputy interior minister.

Wisuda is academically accomplished, holding a bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology from Thammasat University and a master’s degree in politics from Lancaster University, UK. Her career began as a policy and planning analyst with the Ministry of Interior. Her opponent, Gen. Chinwat Maendej, also known as Big Lane, previously served as the deputy commander of the Fourth Army Region, which brings a military background to the political arena.

The result underscores Bhumjaithai's significant influence in Kanchanaburi and their growing popularity among voters. Analysts suggest that the party's strategic campaigning and Wisuda’s strong local ties were crucial to her success. Pheu Thai, on the other hand, will need to reassess its strategy in light of this outcome.

Looking ahead, this victory could have implications for both parties. Bhumjaithai will likely leverage this momentum, while Pheu Thai may seek to bolster their base and re-evaluate their approach to future contests. The by-election has showcased the dynamic nature of Thai politics, setting the stage for future electoral battles.

Key Takeaways

  • Bhumjaithai Party's Wisuda Wichiansilp won with 52,807 votes.

One would hardly call it a "stunning victory" when there were only 2 candidates, one coming from a Party that is disgraced.

I imagine electors were "encouraged" to vote for the "right" Party.
