Priceless Louvre Jewels heist: how was it carried out

A gang of thieves pulled off one of the most audacious art heists in modern French history on Sunday, making off with “inestimable” jewels once owned by Napoleon and his empresses from the Louvre Museum in Paris. The daylight robbery lasted only minutes but has left the nation reeling — and the world’s most visited museum shut down as investigators comb for clues.

According to Le Parisien, four masked thieves used a furniture lift on a construction site to reach the museum’s Seine-facing façade around 9:30 a.m. They cut through reinforced glass panels with a disc cutter and stormed directly into the Apollo Gallery, just a few hundred yards from the Mona Lisa. Within moments, they escaped with the priceless treasures, vanishing before security teams could react.

President Emmanuel Macron called the theft “an attack on our heritage,” vowing on X that the jewels will be recovered and the perpetrators brought to justice. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the crime as a “major, highly organized operation,” confirming that the group had scouted the museum in advance. Both Nuñez and Culture Minister Rachida Dati rushed to the Louvre within hours of the heist to oversee the response.

Footage from French media showed stunned tourists being evacuated shortly after opening time, as police sealed off the area and forensics teams began examining the broken gallery windows.

The stolen jewels were part of France’s imperial collection — treasures tied to the grandeur of Napoleon’s court — and their loss has triggered outrage across the cultural world.

Key Takeaways:

  • Four masked thieves stole Napoleon-era jewels from the Louvre in a daylight heist.

  • The gang used a cherry picker from a construction site to access the Apollo Gallery.

  • President Macron called it an “attack on our heritage,” vowing swift justice.
