Maybe Amazon should contact customer service.

I've been advised that simply unplugging the servers, wait at least 30 seconds and plug them back in works. :giggle:

Amazon's cloud services experienced a significant global outage on Monday, impacting millions of users worldwide. The outage disrupted popular websites and applications, including Amazon Prime, Fortnite, and Snapchat. Engineers worked tirelessly for around three hours to rectify the problem, primarily affecting the US-East-1 region in Virginia.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing wing of Amazon, reported increased error rates across multiple services. By 10:35 GMT, AWS declared that most operations were back to normal, though disruptions persisted for some sites. This incident follows the previous year's CrowdStrike malfunction, highlighting the vulnerability of global systems reliant on cloud infrastructure.

During the outage, online services such as Reddit, Hulu, Disney+, and Signal experienced connectivity issues, alongside major players like Delta Air Lines. The disruption also affected AI startup Perplexity, Coinbase, and Robinhood, with company executives attributing the service failure to AWS's problems.

AWS is a crucial provider of on-demand IT resources, including computing power and data storage for corporations and individuals. The event underscored the internet's dependence on giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Financial analyst Michael Hewson noted the risks of economic reliance on these few digital powerhouses.

Internationally, the outage affected various sectors. European mobile operators, UK banks, and services like WhatsApp and Tinder saw interruptions. In the UK, Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Vodafone, BT, and government site HMRC were also impacted, illustrating AWS's extensive network.

As AWS stabilises services, attention turns to preventing future occurrences. Enhanced infrastructure resilience and diversified service dependencies are likely to be discussed to avoid similar disruptions. The importance of robust cloud solutions is underscored, prompting companies to evaluate contingency measures.

Key Takeaways

  • AWS experienced a major outage affecting global services.
  • US-East-1 region in Virginia identified as the source of the problem.
  • Tech giants' dominance highlights vulnerabilities in online services.

No problems.  No more cash, just electronic transactions.

All ok until the electricity goes out or the server crashes.

Might have played a big part of why Makro, nationwide, stopped bank app scanning yesterday. Cash only the systems not working. AWS crash and burn.

If you call IT they’ll say; ‘Try turning it off and on again.’

Hasn't affected me, but feel sorry for those it did. Cash still has it's advantages, although posting it abroad could be a problem?

I noticed that IMDB dot com was not answering a query.  It is OK today.

This is what happens when Bean Counters take over the decision making on IT infrastructure.

Just imagine if 2Tier gets his way with Digital ID, the whole country would stop overnight.

Cash rules.

Always have a good reserve if you can in cash.

No matter what the technocrats may scream, digital wallets are a hazard and vulnerable to hacking.

We are putting far to much of our lives, our safety, our very daily basic existence  into internet, digital payments and online protocols.

When it all works, fine. It feels great to pay that ST at the local soapy with a card,

But on a fine morning when some rogue nation cuts a vital cable or pulls a plug or plainly hacks the entier network and it all shuts down...we will be doomed. Yes Sir. Doomed.

100 % agreed   the 'technocrats'   would have us all enslaved in their digital panopticon  total control of every aspect of life via Digital ID and Central bank Digital Currencies  all of which rely on the 'internet'   it’s not just a rouge nation to worry about  the most worrisome are those pushing, enforcing and mandating the use of this technology.
