US to London Flight Turns Chaotic as UK Man Gets Violent

A 51-year-old man from Bedfordshire has been banned from international travel after creating chaos on a flight from the US to London Heathrow. Simon Jones was restrained during the flight on 23 May due to disorderly conduct, according to a court hearing. Jones, who suffers from bipolar disorder, has not taken his medication, which results in erratic behaviour.

Jones confessed to using threatening and abusive language toward a crew member in a previous hearing. During the flight, he became disruptive, clapping and speaking loudly during safety checks, as witnessed by the passenger next to him. Prosecutors stated that when the cabin crew addressed his behaviour, Jones began swearing at them over a request for a drink.

He repeatedly disturbed the cabin by frequently getting up and harassing the passenger beside him, leading the passenger to request a seat change. Competent authorities on the flight, including the captain, decided to cut him off from alcohol due to his increasing agitation. Jones’s actions escalated until he had to be handcuffed, having threatened a crew member with violence.

Defending Jones, Gurbinder Tamana acknowledged his bipolar disorder, citing his failure to take medication as a contributing factor. She noted that Jones had only consumed one alcoholic drink and was undergoing a challenging period. Since the incident, Jones has started new medication and is employed at a bar, showing no further offences.

Key Takeaways

  • Simon Jones caused a disturbance on a Heathrow-bound flight, requiring restraint.
  • His behaviour was linked to his bipolar disorder and not taking medication.
  • The court imposed a six-month international travel ban and community sentence.

Good he has been banned from international flights

That sort of disruptive and abusive behavior is a protected occupation for yanks on US-UK flights

All planes need to have a remote-controlled door fitted on the cargo floor for disruptive passengers.

No need to divert the flights, just place the nutter on the floor and say Bon Voyage, then hit the door button :wai:

Yes, maybe best described as an "interesting" choice of occupation.
