Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stood by his ambassador to the US, Kevin Rudd, after US President Donald Trump expressed his dislike for the diplomat during a White House meeting. This remark led to laughter in the room, marking a significant moment in Albanese's first high-profile meeting with Trump.

Despite controversy, Albanese dismissed the exchange as mere "banter" amidst calls for Rudd's sacking.

Rudd, a former Australian prime minister appointed as ambassador in 2023, previously criticised Trump on social media, with now-deleted tweets calling him a "traitor to the West" and "the most destructive president in history." Opposition leader Sussan Ley argued that Rudd's position was "untenable". However, following the White House incident, Trump reportedly told Rudd, "All is forgiven."

Albanese later praised Rudd's relentless work as ambassador during a Friends of Australia breakfast attended by US lawmakers. He commended Rudd's efforts on Capitol Hill and his role in the Aukus submarine deal. Michael McCaul, a prominent Republican, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Rudd's contributions during pivotal talks.

The success of Albanese's two-day US visit, including a significant $8.5 billion rare earths deal, was attributed to Rudd's dedication. Speaking at an event celebrating the 140th anniversary of mining giant BHP, Albanese publicly thanked Rudd for his hard work that contributed to the successful diplomatic venture.

Key Takeaways

  • Anthony Albanese defended Kevin Rudd despite Trump's disdain.
  • Rudd previously criticised Trump in controversial tweets.
  • Albanese credited Rudd for his successful US visit.

Considering some of Kevin 07's astute comments about candidate Trump and President Trump, one is not surprised at TACO's dislike.  If he could, Trump would have Rudd imprisoned.

Cause of celebration. BHP is an environmental disaster not only in Australia but in the Amazon. Lawsuits abound. An Australian institution...
