Bit late to the party there, Chomps... the discussion has moved on past that point.

I wonder though, are you over it yet?

  • It hopes to educate US voters, predominantly from red states, that the demigod of the Repugnant party, Ronnie Raygun, was not a big supporter of tariffs, as they don't help in many situations, such as

  • Who cares what you think about Doug Ford?   Only hate spewing - no discussion culture - magastani-style.

  • Ah, so the bullying Trump and his admin with the same manners are OK, constantly almost every day.   When another country doesen‘t accept it and talks back - thats then dissapointing. Aha.

You are right, I didn't. Just the blurb in the post.  But even so, how doe Ford think this could do anything useful?  Somehow bring pressure to bear on The Donald? That usually doesn't end well. And especially, as I said, negotiating deals is a federal responsibility.  Ford would be better to take up his concerns with the Prime Minister.

But sadly, this kind of gesture type politics is something that he does all too often lately. It is disappointing.

Hopefully it makes people think, I for one went to the original Ronald Regan reel on YouTube and watched it, and I was impressed by what he said, have more of a positive opinion now of Ronald Regan.

Plus it was refreshing to see a President not refer to his own ego or abuse anyone, and he placed the country and its people first.

Hardly to believe that a european would write "I'm a euro".

Get a green card for the US. Or move to Hungaria. As a "euro" no problem. Thats for sure a much better place for you.

No , I'm good here in Thailand.

But yes , Hungary would be a good choice.

Doug is a buffoon.

Ok, but I  watched the ad. It was not unreasonable.

Trump isn't upset by the ad. Rather, he is trying to bully the Canadians into submission. My observation is that Carney is too smart for Trump and too tough too.

This ad is a stupid, performative, waste of money. Who is the target? Who does it hope to sway or convince?

It is informing US citizens of the folly of the current administration.

It's how the thin-skinned man-baby reacts to everything he perceives as an insult.

Carny is just as useless. Don't know how better to put it. Doug Ford. Mark Carney......neither are doing good things for Canada.

Canada is in big trouble.

I allow to extend your post with the link. One can agree or disagree with positions. But Ronald Reagan expressed himself in a statesmanlike manner.

Something Trump isn't able to do.

The last 1.5 minutes speak for itself.

Ooooops...75 million for the ad.

Now that's really  big news.

Emm... The very first line in this thread.

Thank you for missing the point.

Looking at it from a historical standpoint, Reagan was Prez when the trade balance had just started to go tits down.  40 years later, the US imports over half a trillion $$ more than we export every year.  How long can we keep that up?

TradeDeficit.jpg.5007ede3d12e2cd7d160b1a538189016.jpg

Perhaps it is time to rethink '80s Cold War economic policies?  Back in the '80s, we may have needed to give $$billions away to gain support against the Evil Empire.  Today, I'd rather have fair trade policies.

In fact, a reasonable person may conclude that the past 40 years have proven The Gipper to be wrong on trade.

It is disappointing when a provincial leader oversteps his mandate and pokes his nose into matters that are the bailiwick of the federal government. Especially for no purpose. There is plenty of time to talk back AFTER making a deal.

My first reaction was WTF was he thinking? When I started thinking more about it I'm glad he did it. Fear is what fuels an authoritarian regime. Speak up or step back.

Good on Canada and GO BLUE JAYS!

American can no longer be counted upon for reliability and that's not a trade war, that is a trade crisis. America has a superpower credibility crisis. There's a moment during every empire is history when the mirror doesn't recognize the face staring back. August 1st was America's mirror moment, Trump thought he was teaching a lesson, instead Canada gave America a master class in independence.

While America was busy building walls Canada was busy building bridges to Mexico, to Europe, and to Asia. America barked demand for loyalty, Canada quietly earned reliability. Every new home or skyscraper you see, you're looking at Canadian lumber.

Here's what the next decade looks like if nothing changes. America drifts into self-imposed isolation as one partner after another quietly diversifies away from US dependence. The EU, Canada and China step into the vacuum, as the predictable hub of trade, dealing with whoever treats them fairly and the US continues its March into  irrelevance, and it's economy starts to shrink, inflation skyrockets, and joblessness becomes a major problem.

Reagan was right. The guiding principle that Trump not only ignores but has a complete lack of understanding about, is that America became the greatest economy on the planet due to a lack of tariffs, due to very low import taxes. You don't tax your way out of a deficit, the deficit is there for a reason, ignoring the reason for that deficit and simply focusing on the symptoms is a recipe for disaster. We'll have to call it the Trump economy, we will have to call it the Trump depression, and we will have to call Trump the worst and most destructive  president America has ever seen.

Just for fun - it's worth watching 🙂

But according to Axios, the ad is running in Ontario. How will that influence American voters?  It makes no sense. Unless Ford is trying to sabotage Carney before a deal can be finalized. And that would p!ss me off, even though I am a true blue Conservative.  Provincial leaders should never backstab the federal government, no matter who is in charge.

Most people in the Southland also watch Canadian TV along the border.

I'm afraid you have two rather large mistakes here: the ad was running on EVERY US TV market, including Fox news. If it wasn't do you think Trump would have even  bothered to respond?  Secondly, the Ontario premier showed the ad to both Carney and his minders...twice. They had no issue with it at all.

I suggest you look for better sources of information, as your contentions are totally incorrect.
