Maduro Accuses US of ‘Fabricating War’ Amid Carrier Deployment

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused the United States of “fabricating a new war” following the deployment of the USS Gerald R Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, to the Caribbean. The carrier, capable of carrying up to 90 aircraft, signals a major increase in US military presence in the region, raising fears of potential conflict and regime-change efforts against Maduro.

The deployment comes amid a series of US air strikes targeting vessels in the Caribbean, which Washington says are part of its effort to combat narcotics trafficking. US President Donald Trump has accused Maduro of leading a drug-trafficking network, claims the Venezuelan leader denies. Analysts note that Venezuela plays a relatively minor role in the regional drug trade, sparking debate over the true motive behind the US build-up.

US officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, stated that the additional forces will help disrupt criminal networks such as the Tren de Aragua, a US-designated terrorist organization. The strikes have already killed dozens, including six individuals described as “male narco-terrorists,” and have drawn criticism over their legality.

Experts, including Dr. Christopher Sabatini of Chatham House, suggest the US military presence is largely symbolic pressure, intended to intimidate Maduro’s inner circle rather than launch a full invasion. The situation has prompted concerns in Congress over the president’s authority to conduct military strikes without approval, raising constitutional questions about the separation of powers.

The escalation underscores rising tensions between Washington and Caracas as Trump hints at potential land operations, while Maduro continues to publicly denounce US actions as an attempt to provoke conflict.

Key Takeaways

  • Venezuela’s Maduro accuses the US of fabricating war after USS Gerald R Ford deployment.

  • US air strikes and military presence aimed at drug trafficking have killed dozens, raising legal questions.

  • Analysts suggest the build-up is pressure, not invasion, but Trump hints at possible land action.
