Lucy Powell Triumphs as Labour's New Deputy Leader

Lucy Powell clinched victory as Labour's new deputy leader, overcoming Bridget Phillipson after Angela Rayner's resignation last month. The Manchester Central MP promised grassroots members a stronger voice and aimed for a "course correction" in government. Powell won 87,407 votes, surpassing Phillipson by nearly 14,000 votes, on a turnout of 16.6%.

Powell, recently ousted from the cabinet, gained support from members unhappy with Sir Keir Starmer's leadership. In her acceptance speech, Powell emphasised the need for the party to be "bolder" and commit to being "champions for our Labour values." She aims to bring the voices of those dissatisfied with the government to the forefront, insisting on a more assertive political stance.

Powell addressed Reform UK's influence, stating the party needs to "wrestle back the political megaphone" and set a stronger agenda. She highlighted that Labour should not try to "out-Reform" Reform. Her victory followed a tumultuous week for the government, marred by challenges over inquiries and migrant detentions, alongside a by-election defeat in Caerphilly, a longstanding Labour seat.

Despite early momentum favouring Phillipson, Powell gained traction with grassroots support. Endorsed by figures like Mayor Andy Burnham, she attracted voters critical of the current leadership.

Although the race saw tensions, Powell emerged victorious with a decisive yet not overwhelming margin of 54% to 46%. The low turnout reflects potential disengagement among union-affiliated members.

Powell inherits a role that is now more party-focused after Sir Keir appointed David Lammy as deputy prime minister. Her position on the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee positions her as the party’s "campaigner-in-chief." Historically, deputy leaders have sought unity but have occasionally clashed with leadership, as seen with Tom Watson and Jeremy Corbyn previously.

Labour is entering a critical period, where budgetary decisions and upcoming elections will test Powell's leadership. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is preparing to deliver a budget expected to introduce tax increases. The results of these upcoming elections may hinge on Powell’s ability to energise and unite Labour members and voters.

Key Takeaways:

  • Lucy Powell wins Labour deputy leadership, promising grassroots empowerment.
  • Defeated Bridget Phillipson despite initial setbacks, winning with grassroots support.
  • Her victory comes amidst government challenges and upcoming electoral pressures.

It's no surprise that such vile comments would be rewarded by Starmer.

I'm surprised that Sadiq Khan's deputy did not apply for the post.......
