Six suspected drug couriers were shot dead by Thai soldiers, following a gun battle near the Fang border in Chiang Mai province. The confrontation took place after a patrol attempted to stop a group of armed men carrying large backpacks suspected of transporting narcotics. No soldiers were injured, while authorities later seized 1.2 million methamphetamine pills from the scene.

The clash occurred around 06.50 on 27 October when soldiers from Cavalry Company 4, Chaiyanupap Task Force, Pha Muang Force, received reports of unusual movement along the Thai–Myanmar border in Mon Pin subdistrict, Fang district. Troops were deployed to investigate and discovered a group of eight to nine men, all armed and carrying green backpacks, moving through a forest route known as Pang Tong 1.

When soldiers signalled for an inspection, the group opened fire in an attempt to escape, prompting the patrol to return fire. The exchange lasted about five minutes before the area fell silent. All soldiers were unharmed, but six suspects were found dead at the scene, some with backpacks still on their bodies. Two additional bags were discovered nearby, believed to have been dropped during the firefight.

A search of the area uncovered eight backpacks containing methamphetamine tablets, around 150,000 pills per bag, totalling approximately 1,200,000 pills. Soldiers also recovered two rifles of unspecified type from the site. The seized drugs and weapons were taken as evidence pending further examination.

Authorities have coordinated with forensic teams and related agencies to conduct autopsies on the deceased and continue investigations into the cross-border drug network. The Chaiyanupap Task Force is expected to increase patrols along the Fang border area, which has been a frequent trafficking route from Myanmar into northern Thailand.
