Thailand will not reopen its border with Cambodia until specific conditions are met and diplomatic ties restored, declared Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Tuesday. The announcement was made in Kuala Lumpur, following the signing of a new peace agreement with Cambodia on Sunday. Thailand's conditions include the withdrawal of heavy weaponry, landmine removal, combating transnational crime, and resolving border conflicts.

Background context involves recent tensions, where Cambodia reportedly fired BM-21 rockets at Thai civilian areas in late July, resulting in casualties and damage. In response, discussions between Mr. Anutin and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet led to plans for the withdrawal of weapons initiated with the agreement signing.

Reactions highlight expectations from both sides for thorough cooperation. Government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat emphasized the seriousness required in weapon withdrawals. Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit noted that the initial withdrawal was symbolic and urged for continued efforts specifically targeting Cambodia's BM-21 launchers.

Looking forward, Thailand's phased withdrawal plan spans over six weeks, with Cambodia in agreement. The first phase began on Sunday, and subsequent phases are scheduled to continue, aiming for a comprehensive reduction in border tensions.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand demands four conditions for reopening its border with Cambodia.
  • Initial weapon withdrawals are symbolic, requiring further serious action.
