United Flight Makes U-Turn After Laptop Slips Into Cargo Hold

A United Airlines flight bound for Rome made a U-turn over the Atlantic Ocean when a passenger's laptop slipped through a gap into the aircraft's hold. Just an hour into its journey, the Boeing 767 reversed course near Cape Cod, Massachusetts, as Flightradar24 data confirmed. An audio recording broadcast by LiveATC.net unveiled the pilot informing air traffic control of the unusual incident, expressing concern over the laptop's location and safety.

The flight, originally from Washington Dulles, returned to the airport shortly after midnight. United Airlines confirmed the diversion was a precautionary step to retrieve the device, which had somehow fallen behind a cabin wall panel leading to the cargo area. Maintenance crews at Dulles successfully accessed the laptop and conducted an inspection of the aircraft, allowing the flight to resume its course to Rome just after 3 a.m., arriving over four hours behind schedule.

Lithium batteries, found in laptops, can pose a fire hazard if damaged or overcharged, potentially leading to a thermal runaway condition. This risk is likely why the crew decided to return, as the laptop was inaccessible and its condition unknown. Airlines typically mandate the storage of electronic devices in carry-on luggage to reduce this risk.

This incident is not isolated; similar events have occurred in the past, such as a 2024 United Airlines flight diverted to Ireland due to a lodged laptop, and a recent Lufthansa flight altered its path to Boston for a comparable reason. These events are part of a growing trend, leading airlines like Emirates to tighten rules concerning power banks and electronic devices due to the increased frequency of lithium battery-related incidents.

Key Takeaways

  • United Airlines flight returns to Dulles after laptop falls into cargo hold.
  • Inaccessibility of device raised safety concerns due to lithium battery risks.
  • Similar incidents have prompted airlines to adjust rules on electronic devices.

I couldn't send my laptop via USPS because of its super-dangerous battery. The MBP cost  me $329. After sending it UPS, that laptop cost me $1000 with all their unnecessary charges added to shipping.

I haven't heard about any cargo planes blowing out of the skies since Tom Hanks' in Castaway. No wonder USPS is dying.

Oh, this is Boeing bro! If it was Air Bus, the laptop could have never slipped. Avoid Boeing planes by all means. They are a piece of crap.

How is there even a gap that a laptop can fall through?
