Julapun Named Pheu Thai Leader as Party Faces Challenges

Julapun Amornvivat has been elected leader of the neo-conservative/populist Pheu Thai party, replacing Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who resigned from the position. This transition occurs as the party seeks to regain its footing after a significant drop in popularity. Julapun, a seasoned Pheu Thai member and former deputy finance minister, secured the leadership with 354 out of 369 votes.

Paetongtarn's resignation followed her ousting by Thailand's Constitutional Court, which found her guilty of ethical violations related to the Thai-Cambodian border conflict. Her handling of the situation, involving a leaked conversation with Cambodian leader Hun Sen, contributed to the party's declining reputation. As the new leader, Julapun is tasked with revitalizing the party before the anticipated general election in early February.

Former ministers Suriya Juangroongruangkit and Somsak Thepsuthin may lead a group of Pheu Thai MPs to another party for re-election attempts. Despite his new role managing Pheu Thai electoral campaigns, Suriya might be reluctant to finance campaign efforts if the Shinawatra family withdraws their support. This potential split could impact the party's standing, and predictions suggest that Pheu Thai may win fewer seats than their last 141.

The Pheu Thai's future might depend on former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra receiving a royal pardon or parole, as this could improve their election prospects. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul might dissolve the House of Representatives by December to call for elections, aiming to avoid scrutiny over Cambodia-linked scandals. His decision, influenced by the coalition government dynamics, may affect Pheu Thai's strategy and outcomes.

Key Takeaways

  • Julapun replaces Paetongtarn Shinawatra as leader of the Pheu Thai.
  • The party faces internal challenges and possible MP defections.
  • Thaksin's potential pardon could impact upcoming election outcomes.

the neo-conservative/populist Pheu Thai party,

Interesting description.

I guess just about ANY political party in ANY country in the world can be called 'populist'. Why would you be in politics otherwise?

Which leaves 'neo-conservative' ...
