IDF top Lawyer resigns over prisoner attack video leak

Israel’s top military lawyer has resigned after admitting to leaking video evidence allegedly showing soldiers gang-raping a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention camp — a scandal now threatening to tear through the army’s legal establishment.

Advocate General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi stepped down Friday, acknowledging she released the footage to the press amid mounting pressure from far-right factions furious over a military probe into the assault. The video, first published last August, reportedly showed Israeli soldiers forming a ring around a detainee while he was raped — triggering both domestic outrage and international condemnation.

Nine soldiers were initially questioned, but only five were charged with “severe abuse,” not rape. The accused are now demanding the trial be scrapped, accusing the prosecution of misconduct. “Cancel the trial immediately and prosecute the legal chief,” said Adi Kedar, an attorney from the ultranationalist group Honenu.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the leak a “severe propaganda attack” that had inflicted “enormous damage to Israel’s image,” while Defence Minister Israel Katz is meeting army chief Eyal Zamir to appoint a new military advocate general.

The scandal comes amid deepening scrutiny of Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees. A UN Commission of Inquiry this year documented evidence of widespread sexual violence, torture, and starvation inside Israeli detention sites. More than 70 Palestinians have reportedly died in custody since the Gaza war began in 2023.

Filthy scum... A insult to animals to call them animals.

And the whistle blower is deemed the bad person here. All complaints from the right wing and army are on the whistle blower in stead of the rapists.

   Reportedly , reportedly .

Its unclear what the video shows .

Its an alleged war crime , not a  proven war crime .

The claim is that the Prisoner was being searched and that no sexual assault took place .

The one thing about this genocide that has shocked me even more than the massacre of so many elderly, women and kids is the shameless way the IDF lies to cover up their crimes.

They are comparable to the Nazis or Pol Pot.

The Nazis and Pol Pot were eventually removed.

Once again, you cannot back up your claims .

You are making a  habit of making outlandish claims and not being able to back them up .

You have a habit of defending and denying war crimes no matter how much evidence you are shown.

Which is sort of what this OP a is about.

I don’t think anyone could be actually that naive, you are just trolling.

Take it up with the forum administrators, they posted the news item.

Or shall we just recognize your feeble attempts to obfuscate, excuse and deny credible evidence of heinous crimes by Israel?!

I was asking for evidence to be provided .

No evidence was provided .

There is no credible evidence .

Its a claim with no actual evidence .

Its a claim, it isn't a heinous  crime , just an allegation with no evidence to back up the claim

The story is inaccurate and written to obscure the actual facts. It was not a war crime, because it did not occur in a war zone. It was the  israeli  Advocate general who released the video and it was an Israeli news channel which broadcast the story. This does not happen if there is a concerted coverup attempt.

The video shows reserve soldiers at the Sde Teiman military base in southern Israel allegedly beating a detainee. The actions are not clear in the video because the line of vision is blocked. The detainee is reported to have sustained multiple injuries including an injury to his rectum and buttocks consistent with being hit with an object. There was no evidence of rape, nor are the reserve personnel accused of rape. The injuries sustained and documented by israeli medical  authorities indicate a serious beating.  If there was a beating, then there was an organizational misconduct and a failure of the command to monitor. It also reflects moral wrongdoing on the part of the political groups who want to dismiss charges.  The conscripts who did this have yet to be proven guilty, but if they are, they must be  dealt with as others are of similar crimes. The officers and NCOs who were responsible for these reservists must also be held accountable.

There is no defense to make of  wrongdoing. However,  let the moralizing and finger wagging be done at the actual incident and not an embellished and misleading inaccurate description of events.   The Advocate General is taking responsibility for the inaction and her release of the video is drawing attention to the case. That takes tremendous  courage and resolve. Unfortunately, it can be argued that the release of the  recording will prejudice the case. The Advocate General must be very frustrated to have done this as it is a nuclear response to alleged wrongdoing. Once the matter was before a court, it was up to the  presiding judge(s) to release the video, not a prosecuting lawyer.

Prisoners of war removed from the war zone are still subject to protections under international war crimes law.

What you are doing is playing your usual game.

Asking for evidence then denying the evidence.

Its pathetic really Nick, but so very predictable.

There is no evidence though .

(BTW, you my have lost track of the discussion, I am asking for evidence that gang rape occurred, as that was the claim . I am aware that  a video exists , I am just questioning the content . Videos showing gang rape do not exist , because it never happened )

Was he classified as a prisoner of war?  I look forward to your dance of logic on that question.

It’s not just the video though is it Nick?!

We are talking about one particular video though .

The video which was released by Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi .

The same U.N commission also calls for the pro Hamas group UNRWA to be reinstalled as food distributors in Gaza

BTW, arent the UN Commission of Inquiry an independent group ?

The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry
