Trump Administration Halves November Food Stamp Benefits

Featured Replies

The Trump administration has announced it will provide only half of the normal food stamp benefits for November, using the contingency fund amid a government shutdown. This decision affects millions of recipients who rely on these benefits to feed their families. The move comes after a federal judge ordered the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to determine whether it would provide full or partial benefits this month.

The USDA plans to allocate $4.65 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program's (SNAP) contingency fund to cover 50% of eligible households' allotments for November. The remaining $600 million will address state administrative costs and nutrition aid for Puerto Rico and American Samoa. Tensions rose after a judge in Rhode Island demanded action last week following a halt in benefits at the start of the government shutdown on October 1.

Many recipients have turned to food pantries amidst panic as millions began missing payments. Patrick Penn from the USDA noted that recipients might experience delays and complications due to states needing to reprogram their systems. States generally send SNAP details to vendors in advance, a process disrupted by the cessation order on October 10.

The USDA chose not to draw from a $4 billion fund used for child nutrition programs, describing the potential shortfall as an "unacceptable risk" to children receiving school meals. Despite containing nearly $17 billion, the leftover tariff revenue fund was tapped last month for other priorities, including a $300 million allocation to support women, infants, and children (WIC).

Federal judges in both Rhode Island and Boston have pressed the USDA to utilise the contingency fund for at least partial benefits. President Trump has expressed a desire for benefits to resume, stating on Truth Social that he is seeking court guidance on legally funding the resumption. Despite efforts to assist, potential delays while states process funds remain unavoidable.

Legal actions have been initiated, with Democratic attorneys general and governors from 25 states joining a lawsuit. Democracy Forward, representing plaintiffs in Rhode Island, is exploring further legal options to secure full payments. Skye Perryman, the group's president, emphasised the importance of court intervention to ensure benefits are provided as mandated by Congress.

Key Takeaways

  • The USDA will provide only half of November's SNAP benefits using its contingency fund.
  • Delays and disruptions are expected as states reprogram benefit systems.
  • Efforts to secure full SNAP payments continue through legal action.

The Dem shutdown has provided an opportunity to publicly discuss the waste and fraud in SNAP.   It's about time to clean that up.  Decades past time.

How many calories is that mein fuhrer?

I expect to hear from Health Czar RFK jr promoting a new, cost free, health tip:

Odd/even fasting program. Eat one day, skip the next... easy to remember (did I eat yesterday? hmmm)  and will stretch those half benefits out to last entire month!

Judging by the people I saw complaining about "they m'fkin food stayumps" on social media this could reduce obesity significantly.

Of course, if they make good on their promise to rob the stores and other shoppers it might be less effective.

Judging by the size of "they azz", one suspects the posters of said videos have been fed a lot more than me.

There is an entire subculture that subsists on benefits like this. Food benefits need to be limited to cost effective and healthy products: vegetables, ground turkey/beef, government cheese, canned soups.

In the United States, approximately 21 million prime-age adults (25-54) are not looking for work, and about 49% of all people not in the labor force are 65 or older. While recent data does not provide a breakdown of how many men and women in the prime working age are in this category, other reports show significant numbers of prime-age men (around 11.5%) and women (74.3% in 2020) are outside the labor force. Reasons cited for leaving the labor force include personal health and caregiving responsibilities.

Seems these folks have found a better way to spend their time than working.

The real question is whether poor people vote Blue, or Blue policies create poor people.  I tend to think maybe it's a vicious cycle.

Both.

Socialists aim to make people reliant on the state, so the people must vote for them in order to continue being supported. Thus the socialists remain in power and the economy and country is quickly driven into the ground.

My only disagreement is characterizing it as "quickly driven into the ground".  It's been on a slow roll, even in the leftiest areas.

It's that "boiling frog" parable.  If it had happened quickly, there would have been blood in the streets.  More blood than there was, I mean.

But it does seem to have passed a tipping point in the past decade.  Sadly, I'm in agreement with the oddsmakers giving about a 50:50 chance of a war in the streets of the US and UK.  I hope we're wrong.

I also hope it doesn't get to that.

I think the US should be fine. They finally have a President who is doing what he said he would do. The illegals and wrong 'uns don't like it but they don't really matter.

The UK's problem is that the electorate have been voting against increased immigration for decades and continue to get it anyway, now in frankly obscene numbers with horrible, very visible consequences. When people finally realize voting doesn't actually achieve anything, they turn to other methods. I fear the UK may be approaching that.

My concern in the USA is lefty judges and a radical MSM convincing otherwise well meaning people that it's their patriotic duty to take to the streets and commit violence against the 2nd coming of Hitler.  Which, of course is ridiculous.  But if you hear it 100 times a day, eventually you may believe it.  That worked for the real Hitler...

It is asinine to broad stroke that socialists  drive the country to the ground. Nordic countries, France, Canada incorporate many social democratic policies and have stable economies. Even one-party and central control socialist countries like China and Vietnam are successful.

No. The US  House of representatives has not authorized spending.

The money that will be taken for SNAP will come form the money  intended to feed children. This is not right. The children's funding must not be  taken.

Well no, obviously, he outsourced production to China!

The Democrats vote against the CR to keep the government open.  Then they sue over food stamps.  The judge rules the government must make payments, I’d wager this decision would be struck down id appealed.

Democrats are disgraceful.

The dems will never admit the program needs reform.
