Antarctic Glacier's Wild Retreat: Experts Baffled by Rapid Loss

In a startling development, the Hektoria Glacier in Antarctica retreated over 8km in just two months late in 2022. Scientists are probing this rapid change, with a new study suggesting it's due to destabilisation as the glacier’s front, resting on the seabed, was unexpectedly affected. This development could imply faster sea-level rises in the future if similar events occur elsewhere in Antarctica.

Historical context reveals that the 2002 collapse of the Larsen B ice shelf led to Hektoria Glacier's increased movement and thinning. Initially held back by sea ice, its break-up in early 2022 resulted in large icebergs calving from Hektoria. While iceberg calving is typical, the unprecedented aspect is the proposed grounding of the glacier on the seabed before this rapid retreat.

Experts are divided over the findings. Some argue that the part of the glacier in question was actually floating, as floating ice shelves are prone to warm water erosion. The study indicates that this swift retreat may transpire in other regions with analogous conditions, potentially influencing global sea levels substantially. But the exact location of the grounding line is up for debate, which makes the results more complicated.

Looking forward, understanding the grounding zone's position remains key. Determining whether Hektoria was grounded or floating will clarify the study's implications. Despite disagreements on specifics, experts agree that there is an urgent need for more satellite data to monitor these rapidly changing polar conditions and their global impacts.

Key Takeaways

  • Hektoria Glacier retreated over 8km in two months, baffling scientists.
  • Disagreements exist regarding whether the glacier was grounded or floating.
  • Experts urge more data collection to understand and anticipate sea-level rises.

The ’experts' baffled again ...its as if they don't know that at the end of an ice age there is no ice 🤫

I$winder what Greta thinks.

No way is this going to stop until the world climate completely collapses.

This is serious. I'm terrified. We're all doomed. Doomed I tell you.

GRETTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 😄.

... 2022 (?) ...We're 2025 Now & Apparently The Glaciers Are Bigger Than They Have Ever Been... (?)

The die has been cast, the course has been set.

Climate changes, which in the past took ten of thousands, if not hundred of thousands of years, will take place of a handful of decades.  The younger generations will live through these changes.  Old people, like me, will just experience the cusp.

In that case, maybe everyone could just shut up about it and stop asking me to buy an electric car and a heat pump.

Well that's hardly a justification for green taxes and keeping us all locked in our homes now, is it?

No. This wasn't the end of the Ice Age. Right now we are in what geologists and climatologists call an interegnum when the climate warms up before cooling again. Worldwide, the average temperature has been very stable for the last several thousand years a period of warming. It's just recently, in line with climate scientists predictions from the 70's that warming has risen sharply.  In the past when the Ice Ages ended when the those massive glaciers disappeared. Which, if they do, say goodbye to a whole lot of dry land.

Thats what Brgrumpf  wrote on the Cave Wall, we are still here

Meanwhile in 2025, it's supposedly the biggest ice increase in recorded history.

Don't like current data to support your climate alarmist theory? ....... choose data from 3 years ago!

a recent study published in Science China Earth Sciences did report a temporary, record-breaking mass gain for the overall Antarctic Ice Sheet between 2021 and 2023.

"Using satellite gravimetry, researchers tracked this anomaly and linked it to unusual precipitation rather than long-term change." 🙂
