A section of the medieval Torre dei Conti in Rome dramatically collapsed on Thursday during renovation works, leaving the city on edge. Firefighters swiftly rescued four construction workers; however, rescue efforts continue as one individual remains trapped under debris. The incident occurred near the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, drawing immediate attention from local authorities and emergency services.

Built in 1238 by Pope Innocent III, the historic tower was undergoing restoration funded by Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The collapse happened mid-morning, around 11:30, during this significant project aimed at revitalising the tower long abandoned. Multiple firefighting teams and specialist units rushed to the scene, successfully rescuing three workers from the tower's upper levels.

A follow-up collapse at 12:50 forced a strategic retreat of emergency personnel for safety, leaving concerns about remaining structural integrity. The central section facing Via Cavour, including an essential buttress added in the 1930s, suffered severe damage. The chaos intensified when internal floors collapsed, halting rescue operations and spreading debris.

Among the survivors, one worker, aged 64, sustained critical injuries and was promptly taken to San Giovanni Hospital. Two others, with minor injuries, declined hospitalisation. Lazio Governor Francesco Rocca assured that medical personnel are attending to those trapped, stating that life-threatening injuries seem unlikely.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli arrived at the site to assess the situation, while the area was secured by local police to aid emergency response. An in-depth investigation into the causes, led by Deputy Prosecutors Mario Dovinola and Antonino Di Maio, has been launched, focusing on potential negligent assault.

Authorities, including Carabinieri and judicial police with expertise in workplace accidents, are examining the circumstances surrounding the collapse. The probe seeks to assess any procedural lapses in construction work and contract awards.

Key Takeaways

  • Torre dei Conti's collapse during renovation heightens urgency in Rome.
  • Firefighters rescue four; one worker remains trapped under debris.

Nothing lasts forever.

Short cuts don’t just happen in Thailand. We have to wait and see.

That will buff out.
