Thinking of going to HK and Macau for a few days. Wondered if anyone could recommend any reasonably priced hotels and cheap airlines there. I've read on here that Air Asia fly to HK. Does anyone flky direct to Macau or is it cheaper to go to HK and get the ferry?

Also thinking of purchasing an i-pod and maybe a wii over there as I've heard it's a lot cheaper. Could anyone give me an idea as to prices I should pay for one of these. For i-pod say a 40gb Nano version?

Thanks all, keep up the good work.

I was scheduled to attend a meeting at the last minute in HK last weekend, managed to get a seat with China Airlines via Thai Visa Travel for a reasonable price of 8,000 Baht +. As an ex HK resident, contacted my usual Hotel ( Regal riverside, Shatin) where I normally pay between HKD 550-600 per night to be informed that the price last weekend was HKD2200 ! Phoned around a few other hotels, same results all very expensive. Was told it was the tourist time of the year etc etc.

As I hold a multi entry visa for China decided on another way, and it was very succesfull.

I was recommended the Huaan Conifer Horel in Shenzhen - fantastic hotel at about 600 Yuan per night. Took the flight to HK, without going through immigration/customs you buy a ferry ticket to Shenzhen/ Shekhou. 120 HKD, go through a secure area onto a bonded bus to the airport ferry terminal. Ferry take 30 minutes and upon arrival in Shekhou take a 20 min taxi ride to Shenzhen and hotel - 70 yuan.

The Huaan hotel is apporoximately 10 min taxi ride to the Lo Wu border crossing, cross the border into HK and then take the KCR train into Kowloon. very quick and cheap. If you want to go to Macau, then from Shekhou there is a ferry that takes 50 mins, but not sure of the price.

For me this was an ideal alternative and I was so impressed with the system and the hotel that I think this will be my regular way from now on if I should need to go to HK.

as a foot note, Shenzhen cost of living is a lot less than HK and the Chinese yuan is almost on par with the HKD i.e 7.80 to the USD

A good idea is to fly to Macao.I think air asia has a flight there, then get the boat to Hong Kong if you have time it takes around an hour by boat I think.Shoe String travel in Tsin tsa Shiu ,Hong Kong. They are quite good and will find you a hotel in any price range.(I will PM you the address and tel no.if you want)

Abit of advice ,try not to go on the weekends as Macao and Hong Kong get very busy and the prices of hotels increase dramatically.

For the ipod try Mongkok in Hong Kong don`t buy electronics in Tsim Tsau Tsui.Fortress in Mongkok are good google it to get an idea of their prices. Some electronics are cheaper in HK but after you get the VAT refund in Thailand (hong kong is Vat free)the prices are much the same.

I am not to sure I you will need a visa to Shenzen so if you decide on Northaburial`s option you will have to look into this.

Hi..If you'r buying an Wii and iPod I'd avoid any shop in Tsim Sha Tsui as they'll try and rip you off big time.

..Your best deal will be from the Comuter Market in Mongkok or if you want to deal with a big shop, then one of the many Electrical Stores also in Mongkok.

I paid HK$1800 for a Wii. Not sure about iPod pricing but also good in Mongkok (get the MTR Tsuen Wan Line).

If you don't mind staying out of HK then the Gold Coast Hotel in the New Territories is great and good value (by HK standards!) I was paying HK$700 per night. It is about 45 minutes from HK island by shuttle bus which is only drawback.

Cheers, Dean.
