Singapore to Cane Scammers as Financial Crimes Skyrocket

Singapore has introduced a new law that will see scammers caned as the city-state battles against rising financial crimes impacting thousands. The law, passed during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, addresses the explosion of scams both locally and globally, with victims in Singapore losing over ฿105 billion (US$2.9 billion) since 2020.

Scam cases in Singapore have surged, reaching nearly 20,000 in just the first half of this year, resulting in losses of over ฿11.2 billion. Under the new legislation, scammers and those involved in scam syndicates face mandatory caning ranging from six to 24 strokes, while scam mules may receive up to 12 strokes at the court's discretion.

Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs, Sim Ann, highlighted that scams account for 60% of all reported crimes in Singapore today. The country is already known for its strict measures, using caning as a penalty for various offenses including vandalism and serious sexual crimes. This move is part of a broader strategy including restrictions on banking and telecom services for those connected to scams.

Additionally, a law passed earlier this year gives police the authority to control bank accounts of suspected scam targets, managing what transactions can be conducted. Collaborations between the police, the central bank, and major retail banks have been in place since 2022 to identify fraudulent activities, trace funds, and freeze suspicious accounts.

That may increase tourist numbers.

I’ve thought about shoplifters being shamed by having them locked up in front of the stores they stole from but not harmed physically just publicly shamed.imagine some punk mall rat being laughed at by his tribe lol 😂 that would not apply to people who steal food because of hunger though.

You can't,  you'll hurt their feelings. You'll be the one arrested and caned for having a Non-government issued non Digital ID trackable phone in the first place.

On a serious note, full marks to Singapore for maintaining LKY's strong hand paternalistic philosophy.

Yeah to be honest I almost didn't make my original post for fear of being arrested at gunpoint next time I go home. Graham Linehen style.

But I doubt I'll return before 2029 anyway ( unless I need to remove assets quickly after Rachel Thieves from accounts next theft budget).

The Starmer stasi will be gone by then.

Why not?

Stealing is stealing.

Thailand really should look into this type of punishment for both Thais and foreigners who have committed crimes. They certainly aren’t doing any good with slashing prison time in half if they confess. Ridiculous. They wonder why so much 💩 goes on here with their crazy sentencing guidelines. Especially if you have money.  Canned, deported and banned for foreign criminals. Would definitely make some of these idiots think twice. Thais canned and given full sentences. Unfortunately we all know that they wouldn’t be able to do this due to the many envelopes they receive. Not good for business.
