Bonfire Night turned violent in Liverpool as gangs of youths launched fireworks at police and firefighters battling a blaze in a Huyton tower block — leaving a female officer injured and a 14-year-old boy arrested for suspected arson “with intent to endanger life.”

Emergency services were called to Knowsley Heights on Primrose Drive after flames erupted on a third-floor balcony. But as crews fought to contain the inferno, they were pelted with fireworks and rockets by a mob of teenagers. Police say one officer suffered a leg injury and the boy remains in custody as investigations continue.

Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton blasted the attacks as “disgraceful,” warning: “It is only by sheer good fortune that nobody was seriously injured.” A Section 60 order — granting officers stop-and-search powers — was imposed in nearby Garston as violence spread across South Liverpool.

Fire chiefs condemned the assaults as “unacceptable,” saying their crews “are out to protect communities, not to be attacked.” All engines are now fitted with CCTV footage handed to police.

While most of Britain marked the annual commemoration of Guy Fawkes Night peacefully — with bonfires, fireworks and effigies of public figures — Merseyside’s chaos overshadowed celebrations nationwide.

In East Sussex, the historic Lewes parade burned a giant effigy of Donald Trump as “Captain America,” while in Kent, a 30-foot model of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer dubbed “the Farmer Harmer” was set ablaze. Both were part of long-running traditions mocking the powerful on November 5th.

Starmer the Farmer Harmer

But in Huyton, the flames were all too real — and police say more arrests are likely.

Key Takeaways:

  • 14-year-old arrested after tower block blaze in Liverpool.

  • Firefighters and police attacked with fireworks; one officer injured.

  • Nationwide Bonfire Night marred by violence amid symbolic effigy burnings.

Fire service should turn their high pressure hoses on the miscreants and wash them into the gutter.

First they should add indelible blue dye to the water so they can round up everyone who looks like a Smurf the next day.

Friend of mine attended something similar......(as a fireman)........kids were trying to set a car on fire.

For some reason he was suspicious and popped the boot open before the fire took hold to find a propane gas cylinder.
