Schumer's Proposal to End Shutdown: "Ball in Republicans' Court"

Featured Replies

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has presented an offer to Republicans to end the US government shutdown, proposing a one-year extension of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies. Schumer framed it as a straightforward compromise, stating that the next move is up to the GOP. The offer also includes a stopgap bill and three full-year funding bills, aiming to push Republicans towards a resolution.

This proposal comes amidst resistance from the GOP, who are against extending health care subsidies without attached reforms. The Democrats' strategy appears to be showcasing unity on their side while putting pressure on Republicans. GOP leaders have indicated they won't negotiate on health care while the government remains closed, prompting Democrats to focus solely on the extension of existing subsidies.

Senator Gary Peters of Michigan, involved in the negotiations, emphasised that Democrats are merely asking to maintain current legislation and not introduce new policies. The move seeks to fortify Democratic solidarity and dispel rumours that centrists might cave under pressure. On the Senate floor, several Democrats reiterated their stance, with no willingness to reopen the government without addressing subsidy extensions.

As the weekend approaches, the response from the Republicans remains uncertain. Schumer and his colleagues stress that this proposal is their solution to ending the shutdown, but the GOP has yet to show signs of accepting the Democrats' terms.

Key Takeaways

  • Schumer offers to end shutdown with ACA subsidies extension.
  • GOP resists due to lack of health care reforms.
  • Democrats emphasise unity, await Republican response.

Sounds reasonable to me but Donnie’s desperate to kill the ACA because a far better president and man got it done.Im sure he won’t allow his little minion Mike to allow it to get to a vote.meanwhile everyone is at the very least inconvenienced by trumps intransigence and pettiness.

I see you are not aware Speaker Mike Johnson closed down the House. Gave everybody 6 weeks off. Kind of hard to do anything with a patriot like him at the helm. Check it out Trump fan.

The Republicans should not accept this offer because the Democrats will try extend the temporary subsides before the Midterm elections.

This does not kill the ACA.

Congratulations with your improved reading comprehension skills.

Indeed Schumer's proposal doesn't kill ACA, something Trump is desperate for.

True but the call is clear. "“I am recommending to Senate Republicans that the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars currently being sent to money sucking Insurance Companies in order to save the bad Healthcare provided by ObamaCare, BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE SO THAT THEY CAN PURCHASE THEIR OWN, MUCH BETTER, HEALTHCARE, and have money left over,” he wrote in a Truth Social post on Saturday, without providing any details.

Of course the irony, taxpayers can send momey to the "money sucking insurance companies" themselves ...

I read a good summary of the government's healthcare plans.

Avoid paying money to horrible insurance companies. Pay the money into an account of the citizens and let them pay the horrible insurance companies themselves.

They agreed to fund a mini fund to pay for VA, some other core services, and <drum roll> salaries for Congress in the event of another government shutdown.

Reafdng comprehension helps. He cannot end the shutdown. He agrees to vote with maggots if, as they claim, they vote to keep the funding as is.  He knows the lying turds would not negotiate as they promise  so he is offering the votes. IF they agree to status quo.

"Realpolitik" will kick in: Congress resumes, the new member from Arizona is sworn in, the house votes for the release of the Epstein Files. The Fragrant Leader will never agree!

Maga logic from a demented buffoon.

So basically government back open.

Vote in December on ACA which expire December 31, 2025.

Just wondering.  At least 15 years to address Healthcare issue and where are we?  Still pay Premium, $3500 - $5000 deductible, plus 40% co-pay, who can afford Healthcare as that deductible is every year you require treatment?

Hopefully they'll open and government can get back to work.  Can only dream they will actually commit to developing a Healthcare plan to make it affordable and accessible to people in need.
