November 8, 2025Nov 8 Picture courtesy of Bangkokpost The government has assured the public that a repeat of the 2011 floods will be avoided, as authorities prepare for the after effects of tropical storm Kalmaegi, as major reservoirs near full capacity. Residents in Mueang and Pak Kret districts have been warned to stay alert amid rising water levels, with heavy rain forecast across the North, Northeast, Central Plains, East, South, and Greater Bangkok until 9 November 2025. Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Capt Thamanat Prompow, following an inspection in Pathum Thani on 8 November, said water releases are proceeding under the Royal Irrigation Department’s supervision to prevent flooding. Authorities have been instructed to accelerate releases through the Chao Phraya dam to create capacity for incoming rainwater while minimising impacts on farmers and local communities. Energy Minister Auttapol Rerkpiboon confirmed that releases from the Bhumibol and Sirikit dams are being carefully managed in coordination with the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR), the RID, and other agencies. The Bhumibol dam, holding 13.2 billion cubic metres of water (98% of capacity), is expected to receive an additional 400 million cubic metres from Kalmaegi. Daily discharges are planned to increase to 30, 40 and 45 million cubic metres to limit downstream water rises to no more than 20 centimetres. Officials emphasise that coordinated water management, timely dam releases, and ongoing monitoring are crucial to preventing flash floods. Residents are urged to follow local advisories and prepare for possible disruptions, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. Key Takeaways • Thailand is implementing coordinated water management to prevent 2011-style flooding following storm Kalmaegi. • Bhumibol and Sirikit dams are increasing controlled water releases to maintain downstream safety. • Residents in vulnerable districts have been advised to remain alert and follow local warnings.
