A 21-year-old Finnish man, Mr Vesa Mikko Juhani Vertara, was critically injured after falling from the fourth floor of a seven-storey hotel in Udon Thani on the evening of 14 November 2025. The incident occurred at around 23:30 on Prajak Silpakorn Road, with emergency responders from Muang Udon Thani Police Station, 191 patrol units, the Udon Thani Hospital rescue team and the Promprom Foundation arriving at the scene. Mr Vertara was found on the ground in front of the hotel lobby, wearing only boxer shorts, with both legs broken and a head injury.

The victim was initially responsive and able to communicate minimally. He was immediately transported to Bangkok-Udon Thani Hospital for treatment. His father, Mr Mikko Samuli Vertara, 50 and stepmother, Ms Weeranuch, 32, were present at the scene to provide information to authorities.

Ms Weeranuch stated that the family had arrived in Udon Thani at around 16:00 the same day to visit her hometown. Later after dinner, they went to separate rooms: she and her husband stayed in room 405 while her stepson stayed in room 406. Before separating, the husband gave Mr Vertara money to buy food and supplies and he left to make purchases. Shortly afterwards, they were informed of the incident and rushed to assist. The stepmother confirmed that her stepson had not consumed alcohol prior to the fall.

Matichon reported that authorities are coordinating with the Tourist Police to assist with medical care and support the ongoing investigation into how the fall occurred. Further statements from family members are expected and police are reviewing CCTV footage. Medical teams continue to monitor Mr Vertara closely due to the severity of his injuries, including potential traumatic brain impact and his condition remains critical.

i agree... How does someone fall off a balcony 4 stories up unless there is something either mentally or physically causing impairment or a problem with the railing?

It is not that easy to go over a meter high railing and completely fall over it.

How do you know it was a meter?

He might have been 2m high.

Easy: I used to have a condition involving blood pressure that caused me to black out if I coughed. Lean over a balcony, cough, splat.

Finns are good drinkers I doubt he was drunk

Maybe he didn't consume anything... just wanted to end it all.

Yes true, very strange maybe an underlying condition, who knows but obviously under some stress to cause this, if he lives he may be worse than ever this is very tragic, lost for words, I can only hope he gets well.

Know it's a worldwide thingy, not just TH, but what is it with people toppling over balconies.  The low railing excuse just doesn't hold up with me.   Yet to have a balcony railing that I would accidently tumble over, and balconies are almost a requirement with us.

90cm is more than enough to remind people, it's a bit of a drop if you go airborne.

At 21, hope he didn't jump, as way too young.  Hope for speedy recovery & lesson learned.

The number of people falling from balconies in Thailand is becoming alarming.

Yes it seems to me that he used the money his step mother gave him to buy food and supplies on dope instead.

Don't know how high the railings are at that hotel.

If the railing is only around waist high it is very easy to fall off if you are leaning over the rail to get a better view.  You will have more weight on the wrong side of the rail.
