Ukraine Set to Receive Up to 100 Rafale Jets from France by 2035

Ukraine is set to strengthen its defences with up to 100 Rafale F4 fighter jets from France. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hails this arms agreement as "historic" as it aims to counter Russian attacks. Signed with French President Emmanuel Macron, the deal also includes advanced air defence systems and the joint production of interceptor drones.

Deliveries of the Rafale F4 jets are anticipated by 2035. Financial plans are under discussion, with France intending to secure EU funding and possibly utilise frozen Russian assets, a subject of controversy among EU nations. The agreement spans ten years starting next year, underscoring Ukraine’s strategic push to enhance its military capabilities.

As part of this military upgrade, Ukraine will receive French radar and eight air defence systems. Zelensky stressed the importance of these systems for saving lives amid increased Russian drone and missile strikes. Recent attacks have led to widespread blackouts and civilian casualties, with three people killed in a missile strike in Balakliya.

President Macron highlighted the necessity of these 100 Rafales for rebuilding Ukraine's military strength. Defence analyst Serhiy Kuzhan pointed out the advantages of French air-to-air systems against long-range Russian weapons. Meanwhile, defence expert Justin Bronk noted that the impact would depend on the time frame and accompanying missiles.

This agreement represents a long-term commitment, not an immediate arms purchase. The effectiveness of these Western military assets hinges on crucial training and logistics support. France aims to fund the deal through its budget and joint EU mechanisms, though EU funding sources are strained after supporting Ukraine's economy for two years.

While legal challenges exist regarding the use of frozen Russian assets, discussions are ongoing. Ukraine currently operates French Mirage warplanes and US-made F-16s and has made provisional plans to acquire Swedish Gripens. After the Paris meeting, Zelensky will visit Spain and has secured a gas deal with Greece to bolster energy supplies.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Moscow has controlled 20% of Ukraine, steadily advancing on front lines amid reports of heavy casualties, reported the BBC.

He will be trembling with this though.

Will 'Ukraine' as we know it still be here in 10 years??

This could go two ways. We know France is in it for the money, war profiteers, must like Viktor Bout. But, if there is even a world left, what will the geopolitical landscape be.

If Ukraine prevails, why will they need to spend this huge amount of cash for these fancy fighters? To defend their sovereignty, the line of demarcation, in permanent tension?

If Russia prevails, will France, the arms dealers--death for profit, sell these jets to Russia-occupied "Ukraine"?

Best to put the pressure on Russia financially. By freezing Russian overseas assets, or seizing them, France has the down payment in place. The court case will take decades, likely past 2035!
