Trump Backs Off Epstein Fight To Avoid Humiliating House Defeat

President Donald Trump has abruptly dropped his opposition to releasing the Epstein files after allies warned he was headed for a humiliating defeat in the House. According to CNN, Trump reversed course only after being told that the bipartisan push to force disclosure had become unstoppable — and that continuing to resist would backfire politically.

Trump told reporters he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk, framing the reversal as pragmatic rather than enthusiastic. For days, the White House had privately pressured Republican lawmakers to abandon the proposal, even as Trump publicly blasted supporters of the bill as “soft and foolish” and dismissed the Epstein file push as a Democratic “hoax.” The president remains personally irritated that the issue continues to follow him, insisting he cut ties with Epstein long before any criminal charges.

The tension escalated sharply just 48 hours before Trump's U-turn, when he publicly attacked Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene — a vocal supporter of the measure — withdrawing his endorsement and branding her a “traitor.” But with House passage all but guaranteed, advisers convinced Trump that resisting the bill was only drawing more scrutiny.

Now the White House is casting the shift as a tactical reset. Trump’s allies hope that fast-tracking the measure will help Republicans “move on” and redirect attention to policy issues ahead of the midterms. Speaker Mike Johnson, who had previously backed Trump’s position, now says he is open to voting for the bill, arguing that “there’s nothing to hide.”

Meanwhile, Trump has attempted to counterpunch by ordering a DOJ investigation into Epstein’s ties to prominent Democrats including Bill Clinton and Larry Summers. Officials insist Trump has not instructed the department to block congressional document requests, though the open investigation could complicate disclosure once Congress finalises the measure.

With the Senate unlikely to act until December, the White House has a temporary window to shift the political narrative — though strategists warn the Epstein issue will continue to resurface, conspiracy theories and all.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump reversed course only after advisers warned he was headed for a rare and embarrassing defeat in the House.

  • The White House had tried unsuccessfully to pressure Republicans to abandon the Epstein disclosure bill.

  • Trump now wants to accelerate passage in hopes of refocusing attention on his domestic agenda.

If he does not release all the files now he can totally forget about the mid terms.

If he does  release all the files now he will not even make it to the mid terms.

Trump brought this on himself, this is a battle he created by talking about Epstein for years, by elevating it to the level of a major scandal, and then when he realized that he might be implicated did everything in his power to stop the release of the files.

This guy can be pretty arrogant and very ignorant at times, and this is surely evidence of that. At this point his popularity is waning by the day, his policies are failing miserably, and he's in panic mode.

I guess they’ve delayed the release of these files for long enough to have any reference to him scrubbed. It’s all a giant nothingburger. The Democrats blew their chance of the moral high ground by the inaction of the Biden administration. Meanwhile USAs world standing diminishes day by day.

I thought Biden couldn't release the files due to the ongoing prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell at the time.

She was sentenced in 2022. Suspect some “trumped” up charge against a Democrat will be used to further delay release despite what happens in the House.
