November 18, 2025Nov 18 Popular Post Pictures courtesy of The Thaiger Thailand has officially designated five native cat breeds as national pets, a move aimed at strengthening cultural identity, safeguarding genetic lines and promoting the country’s soft power. The Cabinet’s approval, announced by Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat, marks a significant step in asserting Thailand’s ownership of its feline heritage and preventing the misclassification of these breeds abroad. The decision is expected to boost preservation efforts and support economic activity linked to breeding, tourism and exports. The proposal originated from the National Identity Committee and the National Savings Bank (NSB), which highlighted the long-standing role of Thai cats in local culture and daily life. Siripong noted that “Thai cats have long been part of Thai culture, intertwined with local beliefs, wisdom and daily life,” emphasising their symbolic importance. The Suphalak, Korat, Siamese, Konja, and Khao Manee breeds were formally recognised for their distinctive traits and historic presence in Thai communities. Concerns have grown in recent years over foreign breeders attempting to register these cats under international standards, raising fears of cultural misappropriation. Officials hope the new designation will reinforce Thailand’s authority over its native breeds and ensure accurate global recognition. By defining Thai cats as part of the nation’s identity, the government aims to elevate breed standards and secure long-term preservation. The announcement aligns with broader state efforts to define and protect national symbols across several categories. Previous declarations include the Thai elephant as the national animal, the fighting fish as the national aquatic animal, the naga within the mythical creature category and the wai gesture as Thailand’s national greeting. Amarin TV reported that the Ministry of Culture has endorsed the classification, saying it will help promote purebred Thai cats and safeguard the country’s cultural heritage. A milestone was reached last year when the ancient Thai Suphalak cat gained official international recognition from the World Cat Federation (WCF). The decision followed the 2024 WCF General Assembly in Germany after a proposal from the Trade Association of Registered Cats (ARC), and the announcement was later shared on the WCF Thailand by ARC Facebook page. The government views this achievement as further evidence of the need to protect native breeds and promote Thailand’s soft power through cultural assets. Authorities are expected to develop clearer breed standards and expand promotional campaigns in the coming months. Additional initiatives may include collaborations with breeders, cultural agencies and tourism bodies to ensure Thai cats receive international recognition consistent with their origins. Preservation efforts are also likely to increase as officials monitor foreign registration attempts and reinforce Thailand’s cultural claims. Key Takeaways • Thailand has designated five native cat breeds as national pets to safeguard heritage and promote cultural identity. • The move responds to concerns about foreign breeders attempting to classify Thai cats under international standards. • Officials plan to strengthen preservation, breed standards, and promotional efforts following recent global recognition of the Suphalak. November 19, 2025Nov 19 Best news for a long time. Siamese cats make wonderful companions and are very special, as are most Thai pussies.
November 19, 2025Nov 19 It is once gain so refreshing to see that the current Government's Cabinet has its priorities right - national status elevation for 5 breeds of cats; nothing new for most Thai people, still less than zero for all the people born in Thailand, whose parents were born in Thailand, but that these people still have zero legal status in Thailand - thus Thai cats have more rights and status than people of ethnic minority groups who were born in Thailand without Thai citizenship, without Thai residency, etc.

November 19, 2025Nov 19 Good to see the new Cabinet is focusing on cats and isn't wasting time on other matters, like the economy, household debt, flooding, education reforms, public health care, etc.
