Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro says he is open to direct talks with the United States as tensions escalate. His statement comes after US President Donald Trump suggested that deploying ground troops in Venezuela remains an option. The US accuses Maduro of leading a drugs cartel, a charge he denies, claiming the US is inciting conflict over Venezuela's oil reserves.

Since taking office for a second term in January, Trump has intensified measures against Maduro. The US has doubled the reward for Maduro's capture to 1.89 billion Thai baht and launched an operation to intercept drug shipments from Venezuela. This operation has resulted in over 80 deaths due to strikes on suspected vessels, primarily in the Caribbean and some in the Pacific.

Legal experts have raised concerns about the legality of these strikes, challenging the lack of evidence supporting the claims of drug transport. Additionally, the deployment of the USS Gerald Ford has fuelled speculation that its true aim might be to depose Maduro. Trump has been ambiguous about his intentions, leaving the possibility of military action open while expressing willingness to communicate directly with Maduro.

The US State Department announced plans to designate the Venezuelan cartel, allegedly led by Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organisation (FTO) starting November 24. This delay is seen as an ultimatum to Maduro to negotiate or face harsher US measures. FTO designation restricts US citizens from supporting the group and allows the US to act against them more decisively, reported the BBC.

Maduro has repeatedly reached out to the US public, advocating for peace and indicating his readiness to engage in dialogue. Previous negotiation attempts, including those mediated by Norway and the Vatican, have collapsed. Meanwhile, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado continues to seek support from the military to oppose Maduro, advocating for accountability for alleged human rights abuses.
